Renesas announced a strategic partnership with Tata Motors and Tejas Networks on June 29, 2022, to develop and manufacture semiconductor solutions for India and other emerging markets. The automotive and telecom efforts were separate workstreams: Tata Motors was associated with vehicle electronics and emerging technologies such as ADAS, while Tejas Networks was associated with radio-unit solutions for 4G, 5G and Open RAN. A separate Renesas–TCS system-solutions initiative later became a joint Innovation Center in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The public announcements described objectives and collaboration plans, not a named vehicle chip, production vehicle deployment or commercial product launch.
What Renesas announced on June 29, 2022
The agreement involved Renesas Electronics, Tata Motors Ltd. and Tejas Networks Ltd., both Tata Group companies. It covered collaboration on the design, development and manufacturing of Renesas semiconductor solutions aimed initially at India and potentially at other emerging markets.
The announcement also described a separately planned Renesas–TCS Joint System Solution Development Center in Bangalore. TCS, rather than Tata Motors or Tejas Networks, was the engineering-services partner for that center.
“We see great potential in collaborating with Renesas in areas like automotive electronics and present and future telecom networks. The collaboration will accelerate our presence in these areas in India as well as globally.”

The Tata Motors workstream: vehicle electronics, not a named chip
Renesas and Tata Motors said they would explore next-generation automotive electronics for electric and connected vehicles. The announcement referred to vehicle-centralized and zone-oriented electronic and electrical architectures, an approach that can consolidate computing and organize vehicle functions around regional or “zone” controllers.
Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) were listed as an area for exploration under a non-exclusive partnership. “Non-exclusive” means the statement did not commit either company to using only the other’s technology.

Accordingly, the automotive announcement establishes a technology and business-development direction rather than proof that a particular Tata vehicle already contains a partnership-specific Renesas chip.

The Tejas Networks workstream: telecom radio units
The Tejas Networks collaboration focused on semiconductor solutions for telecom radio units used in 4G, 5G and Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) systems. The initial product and solution focus was India, with an intention to expand globally.

The separate Renesas–TCS system-solutions center

Its role was broader than the Tata Motors vehicle collaboration and was framed around combining semiconductor capabilities with system engineering and software.

In a March 2023 EE Times India report attributed to Renesas, the companies were said to have opened a joint Innovation Center in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The report described work in RF, digital and mixed-signal design, as well as software development.

Renesas’ strategic rationale
In a July 2022 EE Times interview, Sailesh Chittipeddi, then Renesas executive vice president and general manager of its IoT and infrastructure business unit, characterized the initiative as a system-level ecosystem effort rather than simply an expansion of a design center. He said near-term opportunities were more likely in IoT and infrastructure, while automotive opportunities could grow over a longer period as India’s vehicle industry moved toward electrification. That timing was his company-executive assessment, not an independently verified market forecast.
Projected center staffing
Chittipeddi described a 2022 staffing plan of roughly 50 people initially, expanding to about 150 in about a year. This was a projection at the time of the interview, not a verified headcount achieved by the center.
“Together we will address the industry demand and accelerate the establishment of a semiconductor ecosystem in India.”

Timeline and status
