If you remove all usable RAM from a laptop, it generally cannot finish starting up. The screen may stay blank, while a fan or indicator lights briefly turn on; those signs are possible but do not prove that RAM is the cause. What you can remove, and how to test or reinstall it, depends on the laptop’s exact model.

Why a laptop will not start without usable RAM

During startup, the laptop checks its memory. HP explains that if the check cannot access the memory chips, testing stops and the remaining startup actions cannot proceed. With all removable memory taken out—or with no usable memory detected—the computer generally cannot complete startup.

The visible behavior varies. The display may remain blank, and lights or a fan may activate briefly before activity stops. These symptoms can also result from other faults, so they are not a universal diagnostic code for missing RAM. HP describes this blank-screen condition in its startup troubleshooting guidance.

Can a laptop start with one RAM module removed?

Some laptops with multiple removable modules may be able to start with one compatible module still installed. That is not guaranteed: the supported configuration and usable slots depend on the laptop. HP’s troubleshooting procedure recommends testing modules and slots individually on supported systems; follow the sequence for your model rather than assuming any module will work in any slot.

What to check if the laptop stopped starting after RAM work

  1. Power it down and disconnect power. Follow the exact guide for your model before opening the laptop. HP’s memory-testing instructions call for disconnecting the AC adapter and battery as specified by the procedure.
  2. Check that the module is seated correctly. Use the model’s instructions to confirm its orientation and seating; do not force it into place.
  3. Test modules and slots methodically, if the model supports it. With more than one module or slot, HP recommends testing each module and slot individually. Use the documented order and a compatible module.
  4. Stop and seek service if access is difficult or the fault remains. Some laptops require tools or substantial disassembly to reach memory. HP warns that mishandling an internal battery—including puncturing, twisting, or cracking it—can cause injury or damage. If you are not confident following the service procedure, use authorized service.

Check the model before removing or replacing RAM

Memory access differs across laptops: it may be under the bottom cover or keyboard, or require more extensive disassembly. Manufacturer instructions are model-specific. For example, Lenovo documents distinct memory removal and installation steps for the ThinkPad E470 and E475, while HP publishes separate removal guidance for supported models: Lenovo ThinkPad E470/E475 memory steps and HP memory-module removal guidance.

Before buying or installing a replacement, identify the laptop’s exact model and check its supported memory specification. A module that fits physically is not necessarily compatible. If memory is inaccessible without disassembly you are not prepared to do, or the laptop still will not start after the documented checks, arrange service rather than guessing at parts or procedures.
