To remove Apple Intelligence from macOS 27, the RemoveMacAI project documents a third-party app and command-line tool for disabling Apple Intelligence features, removing downloaded models, and preventing them from being fetched again. It lists Apple-silicon Macs running macOS 27 as supported; macOS 26 and earlier are unsupported. This is a broad change: dependent features stop working, and storage totals may not drop immediately.
What RemoveMacAI changes
RemoveMacAI is not an Apple utility. Its project documentation describes controls that switch off selected Apple Intelligence features, remove their associated models, and block subsequent downloads. Dictation is separate: the project says its speech models are not removed. Before proceeding, consider which of these functions you rely on; disabling Apple Intelligence affects more than Siri.

Check compatibility before you proceed
The project lists Apple silicon as a requirement and macOS 27 as supported. It marks macOS 26 and earlier as unsupported; its README specifies version 0.2.3 or later for macOS 27.0.1. Choose the right way to turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27

The available sources do not establish an official Apple control that removes the downloaded models. The selective settings approach may turn off features, but do not assume it also frees their model storage.

How to use RemoveMacAI
The project provides a native app and a command-line interface. Review proposed changes before applying them, and use a supported version for your macOS release.

removemacai statusto inspect the current state. - Review the intended change. Use the app’s review flow, or consult the project’s command documentation before running a change. The CLI includes
removemacai off --keep <features>for turning off Apple Intelligence while keeping selected features. Confirm the supported feature names and review what will be affected in the current version. - Apply only if the consequences suit you. The project says its configuration profile requires approval in System Settings. Read the profile prompt and approve it only if you accept the changes.
- Check the result. Run
removemacai statusagain and check the affected features. Their availability depends on Apple Intelligence being enabled and any required models being present.

What the project says about security and system changes
The project author, Om Lahore, says System Integrity Protection remains enabled, files under /System are not modified, and the utility makes no network requests or collects no data. These are claims from the project, not an independent security or privacy audit. The project says it uses Apple’s asset service to remove models and points downloads at a closed local port to prevent fetching them again. Review the project code and profile details yourself if those implementation and trust questions are important to you.
Reversing the change and restoring features
The project documents removemacai on and removemacai revert as CLI commands, and says removing its configuration profile restores previous settings. Check the current README for command behavior before using either option.

Reversal does not guarantee an instant return to full functionality: the project says macOS downloads models again when a feature needs them. Features may remain unavailable while required downloads complete. The project also says macOS can take time to delete files after the asset service releases them, so Storage settings may continue to count model files for a while.

There is no guaranteed recovery amount. Published figures are estimates and reports, not results from a controlled measurement that predicts what a particular Mac will free. MacRumors reported that models can use 12 GB or more and cited some users who said they recovered over 20 GB (October 6, 2026). OS X Daily described a possible recovery of roughly 7 GB–12 GB, if that, and reported cases where storage still appeared under System Data (October 6, 2026).

The amount depends on which model files are present, and visible storage accounting may lag after removal. A continuing System Data figure does not by itself establish that the files are still usable or that no space has been released.
