RemoveMacAI is an unofficial utility for Apple silicon Macs that its project says can remove downloaded Apple Intelligence models and prevent them from downloading again. It may free substantial space, but 12 GB is not guaranteed—and using it disables many Apple Intelligence features. The project currently lists macOS 27 as supported; check its documentation for the exact requirements for your macOS version before proceeding.
How much storage can removing Apple Intelligence models free?
Reported results vary. MacRumors reported on October 6, 2026, that RemoveMacAI could free about 12 GB or more and relayed user reports of more than 20 GB. Those are variable reports, not a guaranteed result for any particular Mac. MacRumors’ report does not establish a controlled, repeatable amount.
Separately, 9to5Mac reported on October 5, 2026, that Apple lists up to 14 GB for its latest models on newer Macs. That figure is a model-storage requirement, not a promise that removing the models will return 14 GB. Read the report and its caveats.

RemoveMacAI is third-party software, not an Apple utility. Its project documentation describes using a configuration profile to apply Apple Intelligence restrictions, removing models through Apple’s asset service, and directing future downloads for removed models to a closed local port. The author says the tool leaves System Integrity Protection enabled and does not modify files under /System. These are the project’s descriptions, not independently verified findings. The project says the changes can be undone with removemacai revert or the app’s “Undo Everything” action. It also says the configuration profile persists across updates, although some other settings may need to be applied again if an update resets them.
Which features stop working?
The project’s affected-feature list is extensive. Removing the models is not simply a way to reclaim disk space while keeping the same Apple Intelligence experience.

- Summaries and replies: summaries in Mail, Messages, Safari, Notes, and notifications; Mail smart replies; and inline text predictions.
- Photos and development: Photos Clean Up, Spatial Photos, and Xcode predictive code completion.
- Other model-dependent features: apps using Apple’s Foundation Models framework, the “Use Model” action in Shortcuts, Visual Intelligence, and Calendar natural-language editing.
The project says dictation remains available because its speech models are separate and dictation is a separate setting. Apple Intelligence features and availability can also vary by language and region; Apple’s overview explains its on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute context at Apple Intelligence and privacy on Mac.
Is your Mac and macOS version supported?
According to the project, the utility requires Apple silicon. Its documentation marks macOS 27 as supported and says it was tested on 27.0; for macOS 27.0.1, it specifies version 0.2.3 or later. macOS 26 and earlier are listed as unsupported. Because compatibility can change, verify the project’s current release notes before using it.

Check storage before choosing a method
To review storage in macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. Apple’s guide explains this view and notes that the macOS and System Data categories cannot be selected and deleted from that panel: Change Storage settings on Mac.
Apple’s built-in Storage settings are the appropriate first stop for reviewing space and managing eligible user files. RemoveMacAI is a different, much broader option that targets Apple Intelligence model assets and disables dependent features. The project warns that the Storage view may continue counting Apple Intelligence after removal while macOS deletes files on its own schedule, so the displayed figure may not change immediately.

Should you use RemoveMacAI?
- Consider it if you have a supported Apple silicon Mac, want to target Apple Intelligence model storage specifically, and are willing to give up the listed features.
- Do not treat it as a quick cleanup tool if you depend on Apple Intelligence features or need a guaranteed amount of free space.
- Start with Storage settings if your goal is to find ordinary files you can review and remove without disabling these features.
- Read the current project documentation first so you can confirm compatibility and understand its procedure and reversal options for your exact system version.
