To remove a work or school connection from a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school, select the account, and choose Disconnect. That removes the connection from the device; it does not delete the organization’s account. If the account still appears in OneDrive, Office, Teams, or another app, sign out or unlink it there separately.

Disconnect the work or school account from Windows

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Accounts > Access work or school.
  3. Select the connected work or school account and choose Disconnect.
  4. Confirm the prompt if Windows asks you to.

Microsoft documents this path for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its Manage User Accounts in Windows guidance says that “disconnecting a work or school account doesn’t delete the account. It removes the sign-in information and data from the device.” The organization’s account remains; this action removes its connection from this PC.

Why the account may still appear after disconnecting

Signing in to an app and adding an account to Windows are not always the same action. When prompted to use the account across apps or add it to the device, choosing that broader option can make the account available to desktop and web apps and register the device in the organization’s directory. Choosing No, this app only signs in to that app without adding the account to Windows Settings or registering the device through that choice. See Microsoft’s work or school account setup guidance.

As a result, disconnecting the Windows connection may not end sessions that were already established in individual apps. Clean up each app where the account remains.

Remove the account from other Windows app settings

Check Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts if the account was added for apps such as email, calendar, or contacts. This is a separate area from Access work or school; the available controls can vary by Windows version. Microsoft describes the distinction in its Windows account management instructions.

Sign out or unlink the apps that still show the account

OneDrive

  1. Select the OneDrive cloud icon in the notification area.
  2. Open Settings > Account.
  3. Select Unlink this PC > Unlink account.

Microsoft says cloud-only files remain accessible on OneDrive on the web, while files marked available on the device remain in the local OneDrive folders. Unlinking is not a command to erase local files, so do not delete the synced folder as a routine part of removing the account. See Microsoft’s OneDrive unlink instructions.

Office

In an Office app, go to File > Account and choose Sign out. In Outlook, the section may be labeled Office Account. Close all Office apps afterward. Office sign-out does not sign you out of OneDrive. Microsoft notes that signing out removes Office settings and clears the recent-document list; Microsoft 365 may prompt you to sign in again to remain activated. See Microsoft’s Office sign-out guidance.

Teams

To end the current Teams session, open the profile menu and choose Sign out. That signs out of Teams only; it does not sign out of other apps or other devices. For a work or school account, Microsoft also describes going to account settings, selecting Manage, then choosing Sign out everywhere in Overview. That is account guidance, not a universal Windows cleanup switch, and complete removal may require help from the organization’s IT administrator. See Microsoft’s Teams sign-out guidance.

Browsers and other apps

Check the specific browser profile or app where the account remains and use its own sign-out or account-removal controls. Microsoft’s instructions do not establish one universal command that clears every browser profile, credential store, or third-party app.

Disconnecting an account is not deleting a Windows profile

A work or school connection and a Windows user profile are different things. Removing a profile is a separate and more consequential action: Microsoft lists it under Settings > Accounts > Other users > select user > Remove. That removes that user’s sign-in information and data from the device. Only use it if you specifically intend to delete the Windows user and have saved any files you need. The distinction is covered in Microsoft’s account management guidance.

When the organization’s IT administrator needs to help

A work or school account can register a PC in the organization’s directory. If the organization manages the device, it may configure settings, deploy software, enforce security policies, restrict access, or remove data from a lost or stolen device. Contact the organization’s IT administrator if Disconnect is unavailable, the PC still appears to be managed, or the organization needs to remove or retire its device record. Microsoft explains the connection and management implications in its device account guidance.

If you cannot access the PC, Microsoft’s account-registration guidance points to the work or school My Account device list, where you can expand device details and choose Disable lost device. This is a remote lost-device action; it is not equivalent to signing out of every app on a PC you can still use.
