To remove a desktop hard drive, shut down the PC, unplug its power and other cables, and use the service manual for your exact model to open the case. Disconnect the drive’s data and power connectors, release its model-specific mount, then lift it out while taking electrostatic-discharge precautions. Case covers and drive mounts are not universal.
Before opening the case: power down and prepare
- Save your work and shut down the computer normally. Turn off attached peripherals, then unplug the PC from AC power and disconnect its network and peripheral cables. A powered-off desktop may still have standby power; Dell instructs users to unplug systems with standby power before opening them. See Dell’s OptiPlex 7090 safety precautions.
- Follow the computer maker’s instructions for discharging residual power. Dell’s OptiPlex 5090 manual, for example, says to hold the power button for 20 seconds after unplugging; do not assume that instruction applies to every PC. Consult the manual for the relevant model.
- Work on a clear, stable surface and watch for sharp case edges. Reduce electrostatic-discharge (ESD) risk with an ESD field-service kit or a wrist strap connected to a grounded surface, following its instructions. HP also advises handling components as little as possible and placing removed parts in an electrostatic-safe container. See HP’s desktop user guide section on electrostatic discharge and its case-opening safety guidance.
Find the right case-opening and drive instructions
Look up the service manual by the desktop’s exact make and model before removing a cover. A case may use screws, a latch, a sliding panel, or a different arrangement, and the drive cage may have its own release. Dell’s manuals illustrate different cover and drive procedures; their examples should not be treated as universal. For an Inspiron 3020, see the component removal instructions. For an OptiPlex 5070, see the 2.5-inch hard-drive assembly procedure.
Use the manual’s exact steps to open the case. Do not force a panel that does not release; check for a missed screw or a different latch position. If the manual or the visible hardware does not make the drive type or release mechanism clear, stop rather than guessing.

Identify the drive and its mount
Locate the drive bay and check how the drive is secured before disconnecting anything. A desktop hard drive may be 2.5 inches or 3.5 inches; Dell’s Inspiron 3020 instructions account for both sizes. A drive may sit in a carrier or be held by screws, and a tool is needed only if the model’s procedure calls for one. The Inspiron 3020 hard-drive removal steps show one model-specific example.

- WD quality inside and out
Disconnect the cables and remove the drive
- Identify the data cable and power cable connected to the drive. Follow each cable to its connector so you do not confuse the drive’s leads with neighboring components.
- Grip each connector—not the wire—and pull it straight out as its design allows. Do not yank or twist the cable. Dell’s removal procedures disconnect the data and power leads before extracting the drive; see the OptiPlex 3070 3.5-inch drive procedure.
- Release the drive using the method specified in the service manual. Depending on the desktop, this may mean pressing carrier tabs, sliding out an assembly, or removing screws. Dell’s examples include both assembly tabs and screw-secured drives; the OptiPlex 5070 instructions and OptiPlex 3070 instructions are specific to those models.
- Support the drive as you lift or slide it out so it does not catch on the cage or drop. Handle it by its edges, avoid touching contacts or circuitry, and place it in an electrostatic-safe container when available.
Protect the drive after removal
If you removed the drive to preserve or recover files, keep it disconnected and avoid formatting it or writing new data to it. The available manufacturer guidance establishes safe handling and removal, not a recovery procedure; consult a qualified data-recovery professional if the data is important and the drive is failing. For ordinary storage, keep the drive protected from static discharge, impact, and loose metal objects.
Quick Recap

Rank #2
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
When not to proceed
- The case panel will not release using the documented method: stop and recheck the exact model’s cover instructions instead of prying.
- You cannot identify the drive, its cables, or its retaining mechanism: do not pull or force parts; consult the service manual or manufacturer support.
- The computer is a compact or proprietary design, or the storage device is an M.2 SSD rather than a cabled hard drive: this guide’s cable-and-bay steps may not apply. Find the exact model’s procedure.
- You need to know whether removal affects warranty coverage: check the manufacturer’s terms for your model and jurisdiction, since a universal warranty answer is not established.
