Remote work is a durable part of the U.S. workforce, but that does not mean every job should be remote or that working from home automatically improves productivity. In the first quarter of 2024, 35.5 million people—22.9% of people at work—teleworked or worked at home for pay, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The practical case for companies is to treat remote and hybrid work as options to assess by role, then manage them around clear outcomes and a workable setup.
Why remote work remains a serious option
Remote work did not return to its pre-pandemic level in the BLS series. The share of people at work who teleworked or worked at home for pay was 22.9% in the first quarter of 2024, up from 19.6% in the first quarter of 2023. These Current Population Survey figures describe the reference week; they include telework and work at home for pay, not only people in full-time remote jobs. In 2019, 6.5% of workers in the private business sector worked primarily from home, a narrower measure cited in BLS’s 2024 productivity analysis.
Employers surveyed also expected work from home to persist. A June 2025 working paper from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Center for Economic Studies analyzed more than 150,000 firm-level responses collected from November 2024 to January 2025. Businesses reported employees worked from home about one day per week on average and expected similar levels five years later. That is a survey finding about expectations, not a guarantee of what will happen.
Together, the figures support treating remote work as a lasting option in the United States—not a universal fit or a requirement for every company. They also show why it helps to be precise: occasional telework, a hybrid schedule, and a primarily home-based job are not interchangeable arrangements.

Are workers more productive when working from home?
There is no single answer that applies to every worker, job, or company. BLS economists Sabrina Wulff Pabilonia and Jill Janocha Redmond write in their October 2024 article, “The answer likely depends on several factors, including the types of tasks workers perform, the available technology, the home environment, worker motivation, and management practices.”
Their analysis examined 61 private-sector industries. From 2019 to 2022, an average 11.8-percentage-point increase in remote workers across industries was associated with an average 1.1-percentage-point increase in industry-level total factor productivity. The authors also report positive, statistically significant associations for 2019–21 and 2019–22, including after accounting for pre-pandemic trends. This is an industry-level association, not proof that remote work caused the increase or a prediction of what will happen at one employer.
The wider evidence BLS discusses is mixed: some single-firm experiments found small positive individual productivity effects for hybrid and fully remote work; pandemic case studies found short-run declines; and separate aggregate research found little relationship between an industry’s ability to work remotely and labor productivity. These findings use different periods, measures, and settings, so they should not be collapsed into a universal verdict.

Productivity is also a central employer concern. The Census working paper reports differing business assessments of whether onsite or home work is more productive. That disagreement is a reason to define and evaluate the work clearly—not to assume either that remote work succeeds by default or that attendance and keystrokes measure results.
How to decide which roles can work remotely
The studies do not prescribe a single company-wide policy. A practical decision starts with the work itself and the conditions needed to do it. The following criteria are management recommendations informed by the factors in the BLS analysis, not a program those sources tested.
1. Map tasks to location needs
List the role’s recurring work and identify what genuinely requires a particular place: specialized equipment, in-person customer contact, physical handling, or time-sensitive collaboration. Separate those tasks from work that can be completed elsewhere. A role may suit a hybrid schedule even when not every task can be done remotely.

2. Check tools and the work environment
Confirm that employees can access the technology, information, and secure systems required for the role, and that their work environment supports reliable, comfortable work. A job’s technical feasibility is not the same as a workable arrangement for every employee or home.
3. Set expectations around outputs
Agree on priorities, deadlines, decision rights, availability, communication channels, and how feedback will work. Where possible, define observable results for the role rather than treating online presence as a proxy for contribution.
4. Compare arrangements and review them
Use the same questions to compare fully remote, hybrid, and primarily onsite options. Consider task requirements, tools and environment, management and measurement, and the circumstances of the people doing the work. Then review whether the arrangement is meeting the role’s needs and employee experience; adjust it when the evidence points to a problem.

How to set up a home computer workstation
OSHA’s computer-workstation guidance treats the chair, monitor, keyboard, and desk as parts of one setup. Adjust them together to support a comfortable working posture; a single accessory cannot compensate for a poorly arranged workstation.
Position the monitor
- Place the monitor directly in front of you, at least 20 inches away.
- Set the top line of the screen at or below eye level.
- Adjust screen position alongside the chair, keyboard, and desk. Ideal placement varies with the other components and your posture.
These are OSHA’s general recommendations, not a substitute for individual adjustments.
Adjust the chair and desk
OSHA describes a well-designed, adjusted chair as essential to a computer workstation. Choose and adjust a chair for fit, and coordinate its height and position with the desk, monitor, and keyboard rather than treating the chair as an isolated purchase.

Adapt a laptop setup to the work
If you use a primary laptop for intensive typing, OSHA suggests an auxiliary full-size keyboard and monitor. A docking station can help position a separate monitor appropriately. These are options for setups that need them, not a mandatory equipment list: the right changes depend on your tasks, equipment, fit, and available space.
What a sensible first step looks like
For a company considering a change, start by identifying roles where location is a genuine constraint and roles where the work can be evaluated by clear outputs. Set expectations before changing schedules, make sure employees have the required tools and a workable setup, and review results and employee experience. That is a practical way to learn whether remote or hybrid work serves a particular role without assuming the same arrangement will suit the whole organization.
Sources and scope
The workforce and productivity figures above concern the United States. BLS’s productivity findings describe industry-level relationships over historical periods, while the Census results capture surveyed firms’ reports and expectations. Neither establishes what a particular company will experience. OSHA’s workstation material is general U.S. computer-workstation guidance; it does not determine legal responsibilities outside the United States or individual accommodation needs.
