There is no single remote desktop tool that suits every managed service provider. The right choice depends on how your technicians reach client machines, whether sessions should start from your RMM or PSA, how strictly you must keep clients apart, and how the license scales as you add endpoints and staff. Three products are described in detail on their own vendor pages: Splashtop, NinjaOne Remote and ConnectWise ScreenConnect. This guide uses those documented features to build a shortlist and a checklist.

It is not a hands-on test. Independent cross-vendor data on speed or reliability is not available, so no objective winner is declared on performance. Vendor descriptions below reflect what each company publishes at the time of writing. Product scope, plan terms and regional availability change, so confirm them directly with each vendor before you buy.

Attended support and unattended access solve different problems

Most MSP remote work falls into two modes, and a tool may be strong in one and weaker in the other. Check both before you shortlist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Attended support starts with the end user. The user starts or approves the session, often by entering a session code. Use this for one-off help on a person’s machine.
  • Unattended access uses an installed agent so a technician can reach a managed endpoint later, with or without the user present. Use this for servers, workstations and devices you already manage.

Splashtop documents both modes in its Remote Support offering. Also check device scope. Splashtop’s MSP page describes attended and unattended access for managed and unmanaged devices, including BYOD and mobile devices. NinjaOne lists Windows, macOS, Android and iOS endpoints. ConnectWise ScreenConnect’s remote access page lists Windows, macOS, Linux and select mobile platforms. Confirm that unattended access, not only attended sessions, is supported on each operating system your clients use.

The three shortlisted vendors and what each documents

Splashtop Remote Support

Splashtop describes its Remote Support offering as supporting attended access by session code and access to managed endpoints with or without the end user. Its MSP page adds endpoint management, patching, inventory and remediation, plus PSA and ticketing integrations. Security features listed there include two-factor authentication, endpoint MFA, session audit logging and end-to-end encryption.

The Enterprise tier adds single sign-on, granular access controls, IP whitelisting, cloud recording, service desk workflows, unattended Android access and APIs. Enterprise pricing is listed as custom.

Consider Splashtop when you want remote support and endpoint management in one product and need ticket linkage with a PSA. The MSP page also cites SOC 2, ISO/IEC 27001 and GDPR-related claims. These describe Splashtop’s own posture. Using the product does not by itself make your firm compliant with any framework.

Workflow fit: RMM, PSA and console switching

The biggest daily cost of a remote tool is often context switching, not connection speed. Test these points:

  • Can a session launch from an RMM alert or a PSA ticket, or do technicians copy device IDs between windows?
  • Does the session log attach automatically to the ticket or client record?
  • How many consoles does a technician open to finish one job?
  • What setup does the integration require, such as connectors, API keys or sync rules, and who maintains it?

Splashtop lists PSA and ITSM integrations, NinjaOne emphasizes access inside its own platform, and ScreenConnect describes integrations and extensions. Each claim is only as useful as the connector you actually deploy, so test a full round trip: open a ticket, start a session, finish the work and confirm the log appears on the ticket.

Client separation and technician roles

The most serious governance risk in shared MSP tooling is a technician seeing a client environment they are not assigned to. Look for tenant separation, role-based permissions, technician groups and explicit limits on cross-client access. Check whether one client’s devices appear in global search, session history, shared scripts or reports for technicians who should not see them.

NinjaOne describes tenant-based access and role controls. Splashtop and ScreenConnect describe role-based controls and access settings in their documentation. Confirm how each product behaves in your configuration rather than relying on a summary.

Control What to verify What the vendor describes
MFA and SSO MFA enforced for every technician; SSO tied to your identity provider Splashtop: 2FA, endpoint MFA, and SSO on Enterprise. ScreenConnect: 2FA and SSO/SAML
Access roles Least-privilege roles that match each client group NinjaOne: role-based controls and assigned-endpoint access. ScreenConnect: role-based permissions
Session logs or recordings Who can view them, how long they are kept, and whether you can export them for audits Splashtop: session audit logging, and cloud recording on Enterprise. NinjaOne: session recording
Encryption Encryption in transit and any encryption of stored data Splashtop and NinjaOne: end-to-end encryption. ScreenConnect: AES-256
End-user consent Whether the end user must approve an attended session ScreenConnect: consent-based connectivity
Certifications Current audit reports, the product and region they cover, and their dates Splashtop: cites SOC 2, ISO/IEC 27001 and GDPR-related claims

Vendor security statements are not independent audits. Ask for current audit reports under a non-disclosure agreement, confirm which product and region they cover, and check that you can answer your clients’ questions about who accessed which device and when from the exported session logs. Clipboard controls are a separate item that the vendor descriptions above do not cover. Confirm them during a trial.

Licensing and scale

Licensing is where many shortlists go wrong. Before you compare prices, establish two numbers: how many technicians may be in sessions at the same time, and how many endpoints you manage. Then ask whether the plan counts technicians, endpoints or both, and whether add-ons change the total.

Vendor Published licensing detail Points to confirm
Splashtop Remote Support Options for 10 or 300 managed computers per license; licenses can scale to 1,200 endpoints under the configuration described on the vendor page Enterprise pricing is custom. Verify current plan and regional terms
NinjaOne Remote Not stated in the NinjaOne Remote material described above Request a quote that covers your technician and endpoint counts
ConnectWise ScreenConnect Endpoint-based pricing with unlimited technicians for the offering described on the vendor’s remote access page Confirm that this applies to your exact product and deployment

For example, a firm with four technicians who may work at the same time and 250 managed endpoints should ask whether a plan counts technicians or endpoints, and whether 250 endpoints fits one license tier or requires several. The answer changes the total cost far more than the headline price per seat.

How to read vendor testimonials

Vendor pages publish customer quotes. NinjaOne’s page includes a statement from Jonathan Zamora, IT Assistant: “One of the biggest improvements for our team has been NinjaOne Remote. With NinjaOne Remote, we can quickly connect to managed devices without delays, allowing us to respond faster to support requests and resolve issues more efficiently.” Splashtop’s MSP page includes a statement from Cameron Montgomery, Owner/Operator, C.M. Computers Northwest LLC: “Fixing problems used to take me up to 20 minutes per task, and now it takes less than 5 to get it done with Splashtop”. Both are vendor-published customer experiences, not independent performance measurements or benchmarks for your environment.

Run a controlled pilot before you standardize

Because no independent comparison of speed or reliability is available, your own pilot is the only performance evidence that will reflect your clients. Keep it to two or three shortlisted tools and follow these steps:

  1. Select tools that match your required support mode and your current RMM or PSA.
  2. Build a representative test set: Windows and macOS machines, a Linux host if you support Linux clients, a mobile device if mobile is in scope, an unmanaged BYOD machine, and a machine behind a restrictive firewall or NAT.
  3. Install agents through your normal deployment method and record the effort, failures and rework involved.
  4. Measure attended and unattended connection success, time to first connection, and how the session feels during a routine task. Record each failure with its cause.
  5. Create two test clients and two technicians. Confirm that each technician sees only the assigned client across search, session history and reports.
  6. Test the ticket round trip and confirm that session logs attach to the client record.
  7. Verify that MFA is enforced, that roles limit actions as intended, that clipboard controls behave as your policy requires, and that logs can be exported.
  8. Request a written quote for your exact technician and endpoint counts, plus the current compliance documentation for the product you plan to deploy.

Use the same scorecard for every tool. A product that connects reliably on your hardest client network and keeps each client’s data separate is a better fit than one that scores well on a vendor summary.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
