How to tell whether a role is truly remote for you
Read the location label as a restriction
“Remote US,” “Remote India,” and “Remote – New York” identify different eligibility boundaries. Before spending time on an application, check the role page for permitted country or state, time-zone expectations, travel, and any office attendance. A remote option on a company board is not proof that a position can be done from any location.

Look at the work, not just the title
“Research” does not necessarily mean academic work. Snorkel AI describes applied research that includes prototyping and moving systems toward scalable deployment. Appen’s Applied AI Research Engineer listing centers on agent environments and reproducible evaluation work. Compare duties, tools, and qualifications with your experience rather than relying on the job title.

Apply safely and prepare for the process
- Open the employer’s career page. Find the role through the company page linked above and follow its own application link or linked applicant-tracking system. Anthropic advises candidates who are unsure about a communication to verify openings directly through its careers page and warns about recruiter impersonation.
- Confirm the listing is active. Check that the role page still accepts applications, note the date you checked, and record the exact location and attendance language. Remove a role from your shortlist if the application is closed or you are outside its stated eligibility.
- Tailor your evidence to the stated work. For research engineering, show relevant implementation and evaluation work; for applied AI roles, connect your experience to the systems, benchmarks, or deployment tasks named in the description.
- Prepare for the employer’s stated interview format. Anthropic says its technical interviews use live coding tools such as Colab and CodeSignal, with interviews on Google Meet, and that it can accommodate a variety of time zones. Those details apply to Anthropic; other employers may use different processes.
Anthropic also says candidates may apply even if they do not meet every listed qualification. Treat that as Anthropic’s guidance, not a universal hiring rule; prioritize the requirements that the specific employer marks as essential.
