Robot Entertainment Kombat (REK), a startup founded by Cix Liv, has shifted from humanoid robot bouts to a reported human-versus-robot event—and planned a later-October robot-versus-robot match with weapons. The fights described in Gizmodo’s October 8, 2026 report were remotely controlled by people, not autonomous robot combat. The planned weapon-equipped bout was still prospective in that report; it should not be treated as an event that had already happened.
What is Robot Entertainment Kombat?
Robot Entertainment Kombat, or REK, is a startup founded by Cix Liv. Gizmodo describes its concept as combat entertainment involving humanoid robots. The report frames the company’s move as a change from robot bouts toward a human-versus-robot event, followed by a planned robot-versus-robot match involving weapons. Gizmodo’s October 8, 2026 report is the source for the event details and the quotations attributed to Liv.
Were the robots fighting autonomously?
No. The bouts described in the report involved robots remotely operated by people. That distinction matters: this was not a contest in which robots independently selected actions and fought using autonomous decision-making. Liv also posted an explanation of a robot stoppage, saying it hit a motor limit in its head and that the software would trigger an emergency stop. Liv described the head as cosmetic and said it did not yet provide vision. Those are statements attributed to Liv’s social account in Gizmodo’s article, not independently verified technical specifications.
What happened at the September 18 San Francisco event?
Gizmodo reports that REK held a human-versus-robot event in a San Francisco warehouse on September 18, 2026. The human participant suffered a hand injury. The article estimates attendance at about 100; that is an attendance estimate for this event, not a measure of broader audience demand or the popularity of robot combat.

What did California regulators reportedly tell REK?
According to Gizmodo, the California State Athletic Commission sent REK a cease-and-desist concerning fights involving a human and the need for approval. Gizmodo attributed the account to the New York Times. The underlying commission letter and its legal basis were not independently verified, so the report should not be read as a definitive account of the commission’s legal reasoning or as a ruling on every kind of robot-versus-robot event.
Liv disputed the commission’s interpretation, saying: “The law clearly states that a ‘match’ is between two persons,”. That is Liv’s position, not an independently established legal conclusion. The available report does not settle how California law applies to REK’s event formats.

Why does Liv call it “democratizing MMA”?
Liv described the ambition this way: “We’re going to democratize MMA so we can essentially experience the blood sport without anyone getting hurt.” The phrase is a statement of intent: REK presents robots as a way to stage combat entertainment while reducing direct physical risk to human participants. But the September event reportedly included a human participant who suffered a hand injury, and the article does not provide enough detail about the event’s rules or safeguards to assess the broader safety claim.

What was planned next, and how does BattleBots compare?
In its October 8 report, Gizmodo said REK planned a later-October robot-versus-robot “deathmatch” with weapons, described as a first-of-its-kind event by REK. That was a plan reported at the time, not confirmation that the match took place. The report does not establish whether it was subsequently held.

The proposed weapon-equipped robot bout invites comparison with BattleBots, an established form of robot-versus-robot combat entertainment. That comparison complicates an unqualified novelty claim: REK’s human-versus-robot format is distinct from robot-only combat, but the report does not establish a technical first for weapon-equipped robot fighting. It also provides no evidence that REK uses BattleBots equipment, has a partnership with the show, or shares its rules.
To judge how REK’s planned bout differs in practice, readers would need details the report does not provide: whether people are physically inside the fighting area, how the robots are controlled, which weapons and contact are allowed, what barriers and emergency-stop provisions apply, and whether an athletic commission or other authority approved the event. Without published rules and a confirmed event, it is not possible to assess those points or classify the bout more precisely as sport, performance, or technology demonstration.
