Reinhard Reisenzahn’s Glitchman modifies a Sony Discman ESP2 so it can still play CDs while producing digital glitches as a musical instrument. The documented build targets the Sony D-E445: buttons redirect data from the player’s Electronic Skip Protection (ESP) memory buffer toward its digital-to-analog converter, and a CV/gate input lets external gear trigger the effects.
How Glitchman turns CD playback into sound manipulation
ESP normally reads audio ahead of playback and stores it in RAM, helping a portable CD player continue through mechanical shocks. Glitchman taps into that buffer-and-converter path. When a control is pressed, random or manipulated data held in the buffer can be sent to the D/A converter (DAC), which turns the data into audible signals. Reisenzahn describes the aim as sending “random data stored in the buffer to the input of the DA converter” at the touch of a button.
That digital source gives the instrument its character: errors can produce choppy artifacts and short snippets unlike the sounds of an analog malfunction. Some buttons produce repeatable sounds; others affect the audio currently in the ESP buffer. A CV/gate input can also let an external device, such as a modular synthesizer, trigger effects.

The project manual specifies a Sony Discman ESP2, model D-E445. ESP is the essential feature because its RAM buffer supplies the data that Glitchman manipulates. The D-E445 is the documented donor, not proof that every ESP-equipped Discman is a drop-in substitute: portable-player circuit layouts differ, so another model may require different connections. Hackster’s Glitchman project describes the project, while the build manual names the target model and circuit points.

When assessing another donor, check for ESP, how its RAM and DAC connections are laid out, whether those points can be reached, its power requirements, and whether there is room to house the added electronics. The manual does not establish a compatibility list beyond the D-E445.
What the modification requires
This is hardware circuit bending, not a software effect or a simple external pedal. The manual identifies IC601 (RAM controller), IC602 (DRAM), and IC301 (D/A converter) as areas where connections can produce effects. It warns not to connect to VCC because doing so can destroy the circuit. Connections to GND commonly stop playback; pressing PLAY can recover it.

Named parts and controls
- CNY17-4 optocouplers and LM324 operational amplifiers for the external-control circuit.
- 2.54 mm (1/10-inch) stripboard; the manual also provides a paper-PCB layout.
- 6 × 6 mm push buttons, with potentiometers as an option.
- Wiring, a toggle switch, and an indicator LED for the added assembly.
- A 9V battery to power the added circuit. The Discman itself should use its recommended batteries or a 4.5V DC transformer; the manual cautions that the player is power-sensitive.
The compact Discman enclosure cannot contain all the extra electronics. The manual describes adding a lower extension box to hold the circuit, wiring, switch, and LED. Its circuit and layout details are in the Glitchman manual.

The finished unit can retain ordinary CD playback alongside its added controls. In Reisenzahn’s experience report, holding buttons or pressing several at once sometimes stopped the output and froze the time display even as the disc continued spinning. He attributes this behavior to DAC overload; pressing STOP and then PLAY restores normal operation.

Changing discs does not necessarily clear the buffer immediately. The report notes that sounds from a previous disc may remain available for several minutes, so the instrument can recall material that is no longer on the disc currently playing.

Glitchman treats the CD player’s skip-protection memory as an instrument source rather than merely as protection against bumps. Its appeal lies in shaping those digital artifacts deliberately: as Reisenzahn puts it, “The challenge lies in creating and evoking these glitches in a targeted manner.” The result is a modified player that remains a player, but whose buffered audio can also be redirected and triggered for performance.
