India–Africa economic ties are a broad, two-way partnership—not just a trade corridor. The latest explicit aggregate figure in the Indian government sources cited here is USD 93.69 billion in bilateral trade in fiscal year 2025–26. The policy ambition is to build on that relationship through higher-value manufacturing, stronger supply chains and cooperation in fields such as agriculture, digital infrastructure, healthcare, clean energy and critical minerals. Those are priorities, not proof that every proposed initiative is already delivering results.

What does “reimagining” India–Africa economic ties mean?

It means trying to widen the relationship beyond the exchange of goods and raw materials. India’s 2026 policy framing emphasizes trade corridors, diversified supply chains, local manufacturing, improved logistics and closer alignment of standards and customs procedures. It also points to potential cooperation in agriculture and food processing, digital public infrastructure, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, critical minerals, electric mobility, manufacturing, telecommunications and emerging technologies. These are stated areas of focus; the announcement does not establish that each has produced completed projects or measurable results. India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, 14 May 2026

How much does India trade with Africa?

The latest explicit aggregate trade total identified in the cited Indian government material is USD 93.69 billion for FY 2025–26, up 14.39% from the previous fiscal year. The figures below are reported for different fiscal years and should not be read as a continuous, year-by-year series.

Period and source Total bilateral trade India’s exports to Africa India’s imports from Africa
FY 2025–26 — Government of India, Ministry of Commerce and Industry USD 93.69 billion USD 45.42 billion USD 48.27 billion
FY 2022–23 — Government of India ministerial statement, June 2023 Almost USD 100 billion USD 51.2 billion USD 46.65 billion

Sources: FY 2025–26 figures and FY 2022–23 figures. The older statement also expressed a goal of doubling bilateral trade to USD 200 billion by 2030. That was a target, not a measured result; the 2026 release describes an ambition to double trade by 2030 but does not restate that dollar baseline.

The 2026 release does not provide the commodity composition behind its aggregate figures. It therefore does not support a current product-by-product account of what India exports to, or imports from, Africa, nor does the increase alone demonstrate that trade has diversified.

Which sectors could shape the next phase?

The official agenda spans both established cooperation and newer priorities. The distinction matters: a sector’s appearance on a policy list signals interest, not a confirmed investment, operating supply chain or delivered outcome.

  • Food and agriculture: agriculture and food processing feature in the current Indian priorities and in discussions between India and Nigeria.
  • Digital services and technology: digital public infrastructure and emerging technologies are part of the wider agenda. The India–Nigeria trade committee also discussed UPI and digital cooperation.
  • Health: healthcare and pharmaceuticals are named priorities, with pharmaceutical cooperation also discussed in the Nigeria forum.
  • Energy and mobility: renewable energy, clean energy, critical minerals and electric mobility connect the stated sector agenda to infrastructure and resource transformation.
  • Industry and connectivity: manufacturing, telecommunications, logistics and trade corridors reflect the effort to strengthen productive capacity and links between markets.

The breadth of the agenda is consistent with the African Union’s framework for cooperation, which includes trade and industry, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, education and skills, health, and other areas. African Union, Africa–India Partnership

How do trade agreements and market access differ by partner?

There is no single continent-wide India–Africa trade agreement in the sources cited here. Legal commitments and negotiations depend on the partner, so the status of one arrangement should not be generalized to all African markets.

Arrangement Status in the cited official source What that means
India–Mauritius CECPA In force from 1 April 2021 A country-specific agreement covering goods and rules of origin, services and other areas including customs procedures, technical barriers, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, and dispute settlement.
India–SACU preferential trade agreement Discussions resumed in 2025; not established as concluded or in force The official page records talks beginning in 2002, five rounds through 2010, and later discussions on terms of reference and modalities.

The Mauritius agreement’s terms are specific to that agreement; they are not a description of tariff or service access across Africa. India’s official trade page says the CECPA covers 310 Indian export items and gives Indian service providers access to around 115 subsectors across 11 broad service sectors. Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Africa trade page

Country-level mechanisms matter as well. India and Nigeria, for example, use a Joint Trade Committee to discuss market access and cooperation. Separately, India’s 2026 statement calls for closer alignment of standards, customs procedures and business practices; that is a facilitation priority, not evidence that such barriers have already been removed.

What roles do development finance and business cooperation play?

Trade is only one channel. India Exim Bank describes its engagement in Africa through project finance, buyer’s credit, lines of credit, capacity building and technical assistance. Its 2025 account places these instruments alongside cooperation in infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, digital innovation and clean energy. These are the bank’s descriptions of its activities and role. India Exim Bank, 28 May 2025

The bank’s study, Unlocking Africa’s Sustainable Growth: India’s Role and Opportunities, identifies four broad pathways for African growth:

  • Climate-resilient infrastructure.
  • Transformation of natural-resource wealth.
  • A more competitive private sector.
  • Regional integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The study estimates an African development-finance gap of nearly USD 495.6 billion annually until 2030. This is the study’s estimate, not an independently verified current funding shortfall.

What does the India–Nigeria example show?

The India–Nigeria Joint Trade Committee illustrates how a broad partnership is worked through in country-specific discussions—and why continent-wide totals can conceal different national trajectories. In 2024 the committee covered market access and potential cooperation in crude oil and natural gas, pharmaceuticals, UPI, local-currency settlement, power and renewable energy, agriculture and food processing, education, transport, rail, aviation and micro, small and medium enterprises.

The Indian government reported bilateral trade of USD 11.8 billion in FY 2022–23 and USD 7.89 billion in FY 2023–24. The figures show a change between those reported periods, not a uniform trend for all African partners. The same release said the two sides agreed to work toward concluding a local-currency settlement system agreement; it did not establish that the agreement had been completed. How is the partnership organized, and what is the summit status?

The African Union describes the India–Africa Forum Summit (IAFS) as the top institutional platform under AU leadership. The cooperation framework was launched at a leaders’ summit in New Delhi in April 2008. The second summit took place in Addis Ababa on 25 May 2011, and the third in New Delhi in October 2015. The platform is intended to support political dialogue as well as economic cooperation, trade, investment, technology transfer, capacity building and people-to-people relations. African Union, Africa–India Partnership

The fourth summit was initially scheduled for 28–31 May 2026. A joint India–African Union notice dated 21 May 2026 said it would be held later because of an emerging public-health situation, with new dates to be finalized and communicated after consultations. That notice does not establish a replacement date or an eventual summit outcome. Joint India–African Union statement, 21 May 2026
