An AI communication simulator lets you rehearse a difficult conversation out loud with a computer-played counterpart that can interrupt, push back, and change tone, then review where you got stuck. In a September 30 post on DEV Community (the listing does not show a year), developer neo xia describes building one called cosskill and what the process taught them. The lessons are one builder’s personal observations, not measured results. They are specific enough to apply even if you never use the tool.

How the practice loop works

The simulator described in the post follows three steps. The loop is short, which is part of the point: you can run it several times in one sitting.

  1. Choose a scenario. The examples in the post are asking for a raise, delivering hard feedback, saying no to a boss, and having a difficult personal conversation.
  2. Speak with the AI counterpart. The persona responds as the other person would, pushing back or shifting tone rather than simply accepting what you say. You speak your part aloud; you do not type it.
  3. Review the run. Afterward, you look at what worked and the point where you stalled or lost the thread.

Three lessons from the builder

The post’s argument rests on three observations from the author’s own experience. Each is worth examining on its own terms.

Rehearsal beat research

The author found that reading about negotiations did not prepare them for the other person’s unexpected response nearly as well as practicing a counter-move. Knowing the principles was less useful than having said a response out loud and felt how it landed. As the post puts it: “Rehearsal beats research.”

The second attempt is where the skill shows up

The first run through a scenario tends to feel rough. The author reports that replaying the same scenario changed the rhythm of the conversation, and that by the later replays they were less focused on defending their position and more focused on steering the exchange. The post’s line on this is: “The second attempt is where the skill is.” The observation comes from the author’s own replays, not from a controlled comparison.

Speaking is a different skill from typing

Drafting an argument in text lets you revise until it reads well. Speaking to a counterpart who interrupts you exercises something else: keeping your point under pressure, recovering after a cut-off, and sounding steady. The author’s summary is: “Saying it out loud matters.”

How the three practice methods compare

The post compares rehearsal methods only implicitly, through the author’s experience. The table below separates what the author reports from what the post measures, so it is clear where the evidence stops.

Practice method What the author reports Measured outcome in the post
Reading about the negotiation Did not prepare the author for the other person’s unexpected response as well as practicing a counter-move Not stated
Drafting the argument in text Exercises a different skill from speaking under interruption Not stated
Repeated spoken run with an AI counterpart The first run felt rough; by later replays the conversational rhythm changed Not stated

What the evidence does and does not show

The post does not cite a named study, a survey, or an outcome figure, and it does not compare cosskill with other simulators. Nothing in it demonstrates that AI role-play improves negotiation results or workplace conversations in general. Treat the three lessons as hypotheses the author found convincing, and check them against your own experience.

Running your own rehearsal

You can apply the post’s three lessons without any software. These steps follow the same loop:

  1. Write one sentence describing the outcome you want, for example, “Agree on a date for a salary review.”
  2. Say your opening line aloud, not in writing. If you can, record it on your phone so you can hear how it sounds.
  3. Ask a colleague or friend to play the other person and to push back, interrupt, or change the subject.
  4. Replay the same scenario at least three times. Compare the first and last runs; the later one is where the post suggests the skill develops.
  5. After each run, note the exact moment you stalled, then rehearse only that moment until it no longer throws you.
