To refresh game data in Pokémon GO, open Settings > Advanced Settings > Refresh Game Data and tap the refresh option. Niantic lists it as a troubleshooting step for both iOS and Android. Afterward, check whether Adventure Sync is still enabled.
Refresh game data in Pokémon GO
- Open Pokémon GO and tap the Poké Ball menu.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced Settings.
- Tap Refresh Game Data and follow any on-screen prompt.
Niantic gives the same in-game path for iOS and Android. The company says refreshing can resolve a variety of gameplay issues, but it does not guarantee a fix for a particular problem. Niantic’s iOS troubleshooting guide and Android troubleshooting guide list the steps.

Check Adventure Sync afterward
Refreshing game data may turn off Adventure Sync. If you use it, return to Settings after refreshing and make sure it is enabled. Niantic’s Adventure Sync help page notes that distance tracking also depends on permissions, device sensors, and a working connection to Apple Health or Google Fit. Synced distance may take several hours to appear.
If refreshing does not solve the problem
Choose follow-up steps based on what is going wrong. These checks may help, but none is a guaranteed cure.

For a general gameplay problem
- Install the latest Pokémon GO update from your device’s official app store.
- Check that your internet connection is reliable.
- Make sure the device is set to update its date and time automatically.
Niantic lists these checks in its iOS guide and Android guide. For operating-system-specific steps, use the guide for your device; device settings and menu paths can change.
For a battle freeze
Niantic’s battle-freeze guidance recommends restarting the app or device first. If the freeze continues, its separate cache-clearing option is Settings > Advanced Settings > Clear Cache; reinstalling is another step to consider if needed. Clearing the cache resets adventure mode settings, so reconfigure them afterward. See Niantic’s battle-freeze instructions. Clearing cache is not the same action as refreshing game data.

For a login or authentication failure
A temporary server problem or a weak connection may prevent authentication. Check your connection, then wait briefly and try again. Niantic’s login troubleshooting page covers this issue.
What the refresh does—and what Niantic does not specify
Niantic describes the control as a way to refresh game data and says it may resolve a range of gameplay issues. Its troubleshooting pages do not explain exactly which data or local files are changed, how much data is downloaded, or how long the action takes. Avoid treating the option as a guaranteed repair or assuming it changes a particular cache.
