The Redmond Space District is an economic-development brand for the entire city of Redmond, Washington—not a separate neighborhood or government district. Launched by the City and OneRedmond on March 30, 2023, it highlights a local space industry that spans satellite manufacturing, propulsion, communications, ground infrastructure, software, and emerging technologies.
What the Redmond Space District is
The district name describes a citywide industry cluster and an effort to make Redmond’s commercial space activity more visible. It is intended to support the cluster’s growth, attract companies and investment, connect local firms with regional partners, and strengthen the workforce pipeline. The designation does not create a new municipal jurisdiction or mark off a particular part of town.
The City of Redmond’s 2024 economic-development plan identifies commercial space and aerospace as an emerging cluster. The plan records industry interest in raising awareness and sustaining momentum, and recommends regional coordination and further promotion. Those actions establish public-sector support for cluster development; they do not show that the branding itself has caused a measured increase in jobs or investment.
Why Redmond is associated with satellites
Redmond’s space-sector identity draws on both aerospace history and present-day commercial activity. City and OneRedmond materials trace the local lineage to a 1967 groundbreaking by Rocket Research, later associated with Aerojet Rocketdyne. The precise company naming varies across the 2023 materials, so the historical point is the site’s aerospace roots rather than a single uninterrupted corporate identity.

The City’s 2023 proclamation also says SpaceX selected Redmond as a satellite-manufacturing home in 2015 and expanded there in 2021, while Project Kuiper selected the city for its headquarters in 2019. These are statements in the City’s proclamation. They help explain the city’s profile, but a company’s headquarters, manufacturing site, and satellites it operates are different measures.
Today, OneRedmond describes the local ecosystem as extending beyond spacecraft assembly. Its scope includes propulsion, satellite communications, ground infrastructure, software, and developing space technologies. That wider supply chain is why “satellite hotspot” is an incomplete shorthand: the district’s story is about an interconnected industry, not only the number of satellites built in one place.

Which space companies are associated with Redmond?
OneRedmond’s district materials list Amazon Leo, Honeywell Aerospace, Kymeta, Microsoft, RBC Signals, Rocketdyne, SpaceX Starlink, Spectralux, Starcloud, and Triumph. The 2023 launch announcement also named Xplore. These names are examples in the organization’s presentation of the cluster, not an independently audited directory of each company’s current Redmond operations.

The published list should therefore be read as a picture of the breadth of the cluster, not as a count of manufacturers or proof that every named firm currently operates a production facility in the city.

How many satellites are made in Redmond?
A reliable current count of satellites manufactured in Redmond is not established by the cited public figures. OneRedmond’s March 2023 launch release attributed two statistics to Alliance Velocity research: that Redmond-based companies accounted for “almost half” of satellites in Earth orbit, and that they could account for “more than 75%” of the world’s satellites in the near future based on then-current and future FCC-approved satellites. The first was a historical claim about satellites in orbit, not a published count of units manufactured in Redmond; the second was a forecast, not a present-day measured share. The release did not provide the underlying methodology in the material available here.
Those figures should not be repeated as current production statistics. A satellite can be built in one place, operated by a company based elsewhere, or included in a company’s fleet without having been manufactured in Redmond. OneRedmond’s current page continues to describe the city as a leading hub, but does not attach a date, denominator, or method to that claim. Without comparable, current data, it is not possible to state how many satellites are made in Redmond or to rank it against other space hubs on that basis.

What the district is trying to accomplish
OneRedmond describes the initiative as a way to build on the existing cluster rather than as a new industrial site. Its stated priorities include:
- Supporting the growth of companies already in the region.
- Recruiting additional companies and investment.
- Coordinating with partners across Washington’s space ecosystem.
- Developing the talent pipeline, including encouraging young people to attain STEM degrees.

Redmond’s connection to Washington’s space policy
On October 2, 2026, the City announced that Mayor Angela Birney had been appointed by Governor Bob Ferguson to Washington’s Space Council. The City describes it as a 23-member advisory group spanning government, commercial space, aerospace, advanced manufacturing, education, and labor. The council advises the governor through reports, with the state Department of Commerce providing staff and logistical support.
The council is also charged with considering Washington-based commercial launch capabilities. That is a state-level policy remit; it is not evidence that Redmond is planning a launch site. Birney’s appointment links the city’s local industry identity to a broader state discussion about competitiveness and commercial space activity.
Was Redmond formally designated by Congress?
H. Res. 646, introduced by Representative Suzan DelBene on August 4, 2023, was referred to the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. It was an introduced resolution, not an enacted law or a federal designation of the Redmond Space District. The district remains a city-and-business-community economic-development brand.
