Verdict: The REDFLY C8N is not a laptop or an independent computer. It is a phone-dependent companion that adds an 8-inch display, 80-key keyboard, touchpad and ports to selected Windows Mobile and BlackBerry phones. It can make a compatible phone more comfortable for typing and viewing, but it is useful today only if you can verify the exact phone, software, cables and battery condition.
What the REDFLY C8N is
Celio designed the C8N as a small-laptop-shaped terminal for a supported smartphone. The phone supplies the processor, operating system, applications and data; the C8N supplies the screen and input hardware. It connects through the phone’s USB cable or Bluetooth after REDFLY software is installed on the phone.
Because it has no CPU, onboard memory, storage or operating system of its own, the C8N cannot independently browse the web, install applications or operate without a compatible phone. Period coverage, including a WIRED hands-on report, treated this phone-dependent design as both the product’s main appeal and its central limitation.
Documented hardware specifications
The following figures come from the REDFLY Mobile Companion C8N/C8V user guide. They are manufacturer specifications, not measurements from current testing.

Compatibility: the most important limitation
The documented software support is historical. The guide lists selected Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 devices (Professional and Standard editions) and BlackBerry 4.6 or later, using REDFLY software over USB or Bluetooth.

Those listings do not establish compatibility with current Android or iPhone models. A used C8N purchase makes sense only when you can identify a specific supported phone and confirm that the required REDFLY software can still be obtained and run. Ask the seller to demonstrate a live connection with that exact phone rather than relying on a generic compatibility claim.

How it would have been used
- Install the appropriate REDFLY software on a supported Windows Mobile or BlackBerry phone.
- Connect the phone with its USB cable, or pair it over Bluetooth.
- Use the C8N’s larger screen, keyboard and touchpad to control applications running on the phone.
- Use the VGA or media-port features only with the required display connection and, where specified, the optional REDFLY media cable.
The C8N extends a phone session; it does not create a separate desktop environment. If the phone is disconnected, unsupported or unable to run the software, the companion has no independent computing fallback.

Is it better than using a phone alone?
For a person who already owns a known-compatible phone, the C8N’s physical keyboard and 800 × 480 screen could make extended text entry and document viewing more comfortable than a period handset. The trade-off is carrying a 2-pound accessory in addition to the phone and depending on legacy software.
Compared with a period netbook, the C8N is not a general-purpose computer: it has no processor, storage or operating system. A netbook can run its own applications and connect independently, while the C8N can be attractive only when the phone already contains the needed software and data. These are architectural differences, not results from a modern head-to-head test.

Price and product status
Laptop Mag reported an announced price of $299 in 2008-era coverage. That figure is historical and should not be treated as a current used-market value.
Current stock, official support, software downloads, replacement batteries, cables and marketplace pricing were not established. A 2011 forum participant described the Mobile Companion line as discontinued, but that was anecdotal rather than an official current announcement. Treat the C8N as a legacy restoration or niche collecting project, not as a supported modern accessory.
Quick Recap

Used-buying checklist
- Confirm the model: verify that the listing is a C8N, not a different REDFLY model or a C8V reference in shared documentation.
- Test the display and hinge: check for dead areas, flicker, cracks and looseness while opening and closing the unit.
- Test every input: verify all keyboard keys, the touchpad and both buttons.
- Check the battery: confirm that it charges and holds a useful charge; the eight-hour guide rating does not describe an old battery’s present condition.
- Verify the adapter: look for the specified 9 V, 2.5 A AC adapter and inspect its cable and connector.
- Inspect ports: test USB, VGA and the media port if those features matter to you.
- Prove compatibility: have the seller connect the unit to your exact supported phone using the intended USB or Bluetooth method.
- Confirm software and accessories: determine whether REDFLY software, the phone’s cable and any optional media cable can still be obtained and used.
