A Reddit user says a Radeon RX 6700 XT that would not work came back to life after 12 minutes in a household oven at 370°F (about 188°C). That is an anecdotal, short-term result—not a verified diagnosis, proof of a durable repair, or evidence that baking a graphics card is safe.
What happened to the Radeon RX 6700 XT?
VideoCardz reported the story on April 3, 2026, linking to the user’s Reddit discussion. Before heating the card, the user said they had cleaned minor corrosion, looked for missing capacitors, and used a multimeter to trace shorts. They then reported that the RX 6700 XT worked after 12 minutes at 370°F, approximately 188°C. After reassembly, the thermal putty behind the memory modules appeared to have expanded and bulged, according to the report. VideoCardz’s account is a report of what the user said, not an independent test of the card. The linked Reddit discussion contains other personal success and failure stories, but commenters’ cards and faults differ and their outcomes are unverified.
Does a card working after heating prove a solder-joint problem?
No. A graphics card that starts working after heat has been applied has not thereby been shown to have a cracked solder joint. The underlying fault in this case has not been independently established, and the reported result does not show how long the card continued to work.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAMD describes solder reflow as melting solder, wetting the surfaces being joined, and then solidifying a metallurgical bond. Its Soldering Guidelines (AM013) explain that package size and local board conditions affect temperatures, and recommend checking different BGA sites because temperatures can vary across a board. Heat may affect more than one part of a board, so a temporary change in behavior does not identify which component or connection was responsible.

Why household-oven heating is not controlled reflow
Reflow is a temperature-profiled process, not simply heating a board until solder melts. AMD’s Recommended Pb-free Reflow Soldering Profile (UG1091) says a profile should account for the solder paste, board size, component density, and component mix. It recommends thermocouples at multiple locations and identifies 235°C as the full liquidus temperature for SAC alloy. AMD also warns that excessive peak temperatures can damage heat-sensitive components and warp boards. These are PCB assembly guidelines, not instructions for repairing a graphics card in a household oven.
A separate Tom’s Hardware report about an RX 7800 XT describes a technician using a temperature-regulated BGA rework station and notes risks from uncontrolled oven heating, including thermal shock, board warping, and component damage. That is a different card and repair, but it illustrates why the RX 6700 XT anecdote should not be treated as a repeatable procedure.

“I have an oven I don’t really need and a GPU that stopped posting. How can I do this safely?”
The available account does not establish a safe household-oven method, so it cannot support step-by-step baking instructions. The user’s reported multimeter checks do not make heating controlled or safe: a multimeter can help with electrical troubleshooting, but it is not a repair device and cannot regulate board temperature.
For a card that will not post, use a decision path that can identify the fault without exposing the whole board to uncontrolled heat:

- Check warranty eligibility. AMD’s warranty information distinguishes products sold directly by AMD from partner-sold graphics products. Check the terms for the card’s seller and product before attempting a repair.
- Confirm the fault systematically. Check the system’s power, seating, display connection, and whether another known-good graphics card or system helps isolate the problem. A board-level diagnosis may require appropriate repair equipment and expertise.
- Compare diagnosis and repair with replacement. Ask a qualified repair technician whether they can diagnose the actual board fault, what the proposed work covers, and how its cost compares with replacement. The sources do not establish a standard repair price or recommend a particular provider.
- Choose based on the outcome you need. A card briefly powering on is not the same as a confirmed, durable repair. If reliability matters, seek diagnosis and repair rather than treating the anecdotal oven result as a lasting fix.
What the story does—and does not—show
- It shows: a user reported that an RX 6700 XT worked after 12 minutes in an oven at 370°F (about 188°C), following other troubleshooting.
- It does not show: an independently verified fault, a confirmed solder-joint failure, a safe method, or how long the card remained functional.
- There is no measured success rate or repair-life statistic established by these accounts. Individual Reddit comments are not population data.
