A Reddit user says an Airbnb host requested A$1,700 in damage reimbursement using a photo of an overflowing toilet that the user suspected was AI-generated. The poster later reported that Airbnb deemed the request ineligible. Neither the image’s origin nor the host’s intent is independently established in the available accounts.
What the Reddit user says happened
In a September 29, 2026 post to r/isthisAI, a user said an Airbnb host submitted a photograph allegedly showing an overflowing toilet and sought A$1,700 in reimbursement. The amount and events are the poster’s account; no Airbnb case record or independent account of the demand was reviewed.
The poster questioned whether the image looked realistic, writing: “It feels inconsistent with AI qualities like the water dripping from the toilet but no splashes. the entire house should flood at this point.” They also said they had not used toilet paper during the stay, while acknowledging uncertainty about whether another person might have caused genuine damage: “I did not even use toilet paper during my stay so I coudln’t have left those damages but I am wondering if someone else might have and those are real.”

The image is alleged to be AI-generated
The poster suspected the toilet photo was AI-generated. A PC Gamer report published October 2, 2026 described it as AI-generated and said Gemini detected a SynthID watermark. The accounts available here do not include an independent forensic assessment of the image, so its provenance cannot be treated as verified.

The poster says Airbnb rejected the reimbursement request
In an update quoted by PC Gamer, the Reddit user said the case had been resolved and deemed ineligible for the requested reimbursement. The update supports that the poster reported this outcome; it is not an Airbnb statement, and the platform’s case record was not available for independent confirmation. The available accounts also do not establish that the host knowingly submitted fabricated evidence or acted fraudulently.
How to document a rental stay if a dispute arises
PC Gamer advised taking photos and videos of a rental before leaving. This is general documentation advice, not a guarantee that a platform will resolve a dispute in a particular way or a statement of Airbnb policy.
