The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) fined Reddit, Inc. £14,472,500 over its handling of children’s personal information. The Associated Press rounded that to about $19.5 million—hence the “$20 million” headline. The ICO said Reddit lacked robust age assurance and had not assessed risks to children before January 2025. The regulator’s latest listed update says Reddit appealed the penalty on 1 April 2026; the appeal outcome is not established in the available sources.
How much was Reddit fined?
The ICO’s enforcement record gives the penalty as £14,472,500. That is the legal penalty amount stated by the UK regulator. The Associated Press reported an approximate conversion of about $19.5 million, which is rounded and explains the headline’s “$20 million” wording.

Why did the ICO fine Reddit?
The ICO said Reddit did not have robust age assurance and therefore lacked a lawful basis to process the personal information of children under 13. It also said Reddit had not carried out a data protection impact assessment to assess and mitigate risks to children before January 2025. The regulator linked those shortcomings to the risk that children could be exposed to inappropriate or harmful content.

This is the regulator’s stated legal characterization of the case, not a separate finding here that the fine was imposed solely for content moderation or under the Online Safety Act.

UK Information Commissioner John Edwards told the Associated Press: “Children under 13 had their personal information collected and used in ways they could not understand, consent to or control.” That is the Commissioner’s description of the ICO’s concerns.
What did Reddit say?
Reddit disputed the regulator’s position on age checks and privacy. The Associated Press quoted the company as saying: “The ICO’s insistence that we collect more private information on every UK user is counterintuitive and at odds with our strong belief in our users’ online privacy and safety.” This is Reddit’s stated position, distinct from the ICO’s findings.
