Red-eye in a photograph is a predictable optical effect, not a faulty camera. In dim light, a wide pupil lets flash enter the eye; some light reflects back from the rear of the eye, and a flash close to the lens makes that return visible to the camera.
How the red reflection forms
The effect follows a simple chain. In a dim room, pupils widen to admit more light. When a nearby flash fires, some of its light passes through the pupil and scatters back from the back of the eye. The resulting red reflex is associated with blood-rich tissue behind the pupil. The camera records that returning light when its lens is positioned to see it.
This is not a picture of the entire inside of the eye, and it does not mean the camera has malfunctioned. Moorfields Eye Hospital describes the red reflex as light reflected from the back of the eye, while Nikon’s flash manual explains how a wide pupil can make the illuminated retina visible in a photograph.

Dim surroundings leave pupils wide
Low ambient light encourages pupils to open wider, making it easier for flash light to enter and return from the eye. Brighter surroundings tend to narrow the pupils and reduce the effect.

Looking toward the camera aligns the reflection
When a subject looks toward the camera, light returning from the eye is more likely to travel toward the lens. Asking someone to look slightly to one side can redirect some of that reflection away from the camera.
A flash close to the lens captures the return path
With a built-in or compact-camera flash, the flash and lens are close together and nearly aligned. That geometry makes it easier for the lens to capture light returning from the eye. Moving the flash farther off the lens axis changes the angle and makes the reflected light less likely to enter the lens.

The Hong Kong Observatory estimates an angle of about 2.5 degrees for red-eye to occur. That is an approximate figure from the Observatory, not a universal cutoff: the outcome also depends on the subject’s gaze, pupil size, and the camera-and-flash arrangement.
Ways to prevent red-eye before taking the picture
Increase the ambient light
Turn on room lights or move to a brighter spot before using flash. Brighter surroundings encourage smaller pupils, reducing the chance of a visible red reflection.

Have the subject look just beside the lens
A slight change in gaze may send the eye’s returning reflection away from the camera. This is a simple option when you cannot change the flash position.
Separate the flash from the lens
An external flash positioned farther from the camera changes the illumination angle, so the returning reflection is less likely to line up with the lens. Nikon recommends placing an external flash as far from the camera as possible. Check that any flash you use is compatible with your camera.

Enable red-eye reduction
Many cameras use one or more preliminary flashes before the exposure. The flashes prompt pupils to constrict, which can reduce the visible effect, but may not eliminate it. The setting’s name and location vary by camera; consult its flash or shooting menu for “Red-eye reduction.”
How to correct red-eye in an existing photo
If the photo is already taken, Adobe Photoshop provides a Red Eye tool. Adobe’s documented workflow lets you click the red or white reflection and adjust pupil size and darkening controls. This repairs the appearance in the image rather than changing the original lighting or eye reflection.

Why animal eyes can reflect a different color
Some animals have a reflective layer behind the retina that helps improve low-light vision. Flash can produce colored eyeshine from that layer, rather than the familiar human red-eye appearance. The color varies; not all animals have the same reflective layer, and their eyeshine is not always one color.
