Red Echoes: Berlin, from Morningrise Games, is a political strategy game set in Berlin during the German Revolution of 1918–1919. You play three fictional people from different parts of German society who try to push a brewing socialist uprising toward real change. A playable demo is on Steam now, and the full game is planned for Q1 2027 but is not yet available.
What Red Echoes: Berlin actually is
The game is a narrative strategy title that combines visual-novel storytelling with turn-based movement on a political map. Its Steam description sets it in 1918 Berlin and puts the player in charge of the story of three characters. In the store’s own words, the game lets you “take control of the story of three fictional characters, each from a different section of society, and attempt to support the brewing socialist uprising in Germany and bring about real change.” That framing matters for the rest of this article: the protagonists are invented, and the famous names sit in the supporting cast.
How it plays, according to hands-on impressions
PC Gamer’s Joshua Wolens played the demo and described it as a blend of visual novel and board-game-style turn strategy (PC Gamer, October 8, 2026). The details below come from that preview and should be read as one reviewer’s account of the early demo, not a full evaluation of the finished game.

Moving three characters across the map
The player moves three characters around a map. Each character has different abilities, and those abilities are used to influence three kinds of pressure: revolutionary fervor, reactionary zeal, and the general pressure the player can apply to the situation. The turn-based structure means you are choosing where to place people, not just which dialogue option to pick.

Story choices that reshape the board
Narrative decisions feed back into the map. According to the preview, some choices involve short-term compromises in exchange for hoped-for longer-term gains. That trade-off is the core tension of the design: a move that looks sensible this turn can weaken your position later, and the preview describes this as a deliberate part of the experience.
What the map shows you
The map uses a Weimar-era graphic-design style, and its appearance changes as red revolutionary sentiment and yellow reactionary sentiment spread across it. The reviewer’s view was that the early demo felt relatively forgiving and that its writing was strong. Those are subjective impressions from one playthrough of the demo, not a measure of difficulty across the full campaign.

Who is in the story
The three central characters are fictional people from different social backgrounds, and that choice is what gives the game its angle. Instead of following a famous leader through events, you see the revolution from ordinary positions in society. Historical figures, including Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, appear in the wider cast. You do not directly control them.

The full game’s Steam listing estimates a story of three to four hours, split into three chapters. That is the store’s own estimate, accessed October 8, 2026, and it has not been independently timed. Because the release window is a plan, check the full-game store page before you buy; the listing is the place where any change in timing will appear first.
The history behind the framing
The game’s setting covers two linked but distinct moments, and it helps to keep them apart. The German Revolution began in 1918, when Germany’s monarchy collapsed and councils and workers’ movements gained influence across the country. The Spartacist uprising in Berlin, which the PC Gamer preview treats as central to the game’s framing, is associated with January 1919. The game spans the broader 1918–1919 revolution, with the uprising at its center.

What to weigh before you commit
- Try the demo first if the mechanics matter to you. The preview suggests the game’s appeal depends on balancing narrative choices against map pressure, and the demo is the only version you can test today.
- Expect a short, chapter-based story. The three-to-four-hour estimate describes a compact experience, not a long campaign.
- Treat the Q1 2027 window as provisional. Plan around it loosely rather than around a specific day.
- Read the preview’s opinions as opinions. The praise for the writing and the relatively forgiving early demo come from one reviewer’s playthrough.
If the idea of a revolution seen from ordinary positions rather than from its famous leaders is what caught your attention, the demo is the quickest way to find out whether the game’s blend of story and map strategy works for you.
