Prepaid service is paid for before use; postpaid service is billed after use. But there is no universal rule for reactivating an expired prepaid SIM: the recovery window, fees, identity checks, and treatment of unused credit depend on the carrier and country. Check the operator’s current local terms before paying or switching.
What “prepaid” and “contract” mean
Prepaid customers add money or buy service before using it. Postpaid customers use service first and receive a bill afterward. “Contract SIM” is often used to mean postpaid, but it does not necessarily mean a fixed-term commitment: payment timing and contract length are separate questions.
With prepaid, service can stop when validity expires or funds run out. With postpaid, a monthly bill or other ongoing charge may continue. Neither model guarantees that an inactive number will remain available indefinitely.

Can you reactivate an expired prepaid SIM?
Sometimes, but “expired” can describe different account states. A line might be temporarily suspended, beyond its validity period, deactivated for inactivity, permanently disconnected, or already released for reassignment. Those states can have different recovery steps. A top-up is not a universal fix, and balance retention is a separate question from whether the number can be recovered.

Check the carrier’s current status and deadline
Contact the operator through its official support channel and ask whether the number is suspended, expired, permanently disconnected, or released; the last date it can be recovered; and whether recovery requires a top-up, fee, identity verification, or branch visit. Ask separately whether unused credit will be restored and whether the process preserves the same number.
Examples of country- and carrier-specific rules
In Cambodia, the Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia announced on 22 December 2025 that requirements effective 1 January 2026 allow a number expired for no more than 180 days to be reactivated by topping up the main account, without re-registration at an operator branch. Operators must retain the main-account balance for 180 days after service expiry and restore the remaining balance when the customer tops up during that period. They must also send at least two SMS reminders and app reminders before the retention period ends. These rules apply in Cambodia, not globally. Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia.

In India, Reliance Jio says it may deactivate a prepaid number after 90 days or more without the activity specified in its policy. If the main-account balance is above ₹20 at the end of 90 days, its Automatic Number Retention Scheme deducts ₹20 and extends the non-use period by 30 days. The process continues until the balance is below ₹20, after which the number may be deactivated. Jio says a number deactivated for non-use can be reactivated by paying ₹20 within 15 days; re-KYC and an applicable recharge are also required. These are Jio’s terms, not an India-wide rule. For postpaid customers who expect continued non-use, Jio describes a Safe Custody Scheme costing ₹150 plus applicable taxes in advance for each three-month period or part of one. Dues and advance charges must be cleared; Jio says a restoration request during the custody period reactivates the number within 24 hours, and platform-services rental may continue. In Canada, the CRTC says prepaid customers have a minimum seven-calendar-day grace period to top up and retain their balance under its Wireless Code summary. That Canadian protection should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. CRTC mobile phone guidance.

- Is the line suspended, expired, permanently disconnected, or already released?
- What is the final date to recover the existing number?
- Does recovery require a top-up, separate fee, re-KYC or other identity check, or an in-person visit?
- Will the remaining balance be restored, retained, deducted, or forfeited?
- Will the process preserve the same number?
- Can this account migrate to the other service type, and are there account-specific conditions?
Get the answers from the operator before making a payment: rules about number recovery, retained credit, and plan migration are distinct, and the examples above apply only to their stated jurisdictions or carrier.
