Yahoo can send Terms of Service change notices by email, so receiving one is plausible—but that does not prove your particular message is genuine. Don’t click its links or provide information until you verify the notice through Yahoo’s official site, opened independently.

Does Yahoo send Terms of Service updates by email?

Yes. Yahoo’s U.S. Terms of Service say the company may send notices about changes to the terms through channels including email. That makes an update email possible, but the policy does not authenticate any individual message. Because the email itself is not available for inspection, its sender, links, claimed revision, effective date, and requested action cannot be verified here. Yahoo’s U.S. Terms of Service

Yahoo also says administrative notices about changes to its terms or privacy policy cannot be unsubscribed from through marketing preferences. A genuine notice may therefore arrive even if you opted out of promotional email. That fact alone does not establish whether a particular message is legitimate. How to verify the notice without using its links

  1. Avoid interacting with a suspicious message. Do not click its links or attachments, reply with personal information, or use contact details included in the email. Yahoo advises recipients who think a message may be fake not to respond or click its links. Yahoo’s phishing guidance
  2. Open Yahoo’s legal site independently. Type the official address yourself or find Yahoo’s legal site using a trusted route. Use its international terms index to select the country or region that applies to you, then compare the relevant terms with the email’s description and any stated effective date.
  3. Check the date and service covered. Make sure the terms are for your region and the Yahoo service named in the message. The U.S. terms generally say changes take effect when posted unless Yahoo says otherwise, and say Yahoo will provide notice of material changes. Regional exceptions apply; some security, safety, legal, or regulatory changes may be communicated as soon as practicable rather than in advance. Do not assume the U.S. timing rule or any cancellation right applies to you. Yahoo’s U.S. Terms of Service
  4. Report or remove a message that remains suspicious. Use Yahoo Mail’s spam or phishing reporting controls, or delete the email. Yahoo says reports help improve its filters. Yahoo’s phishing guidance

Clues that do—and do not—establish authenticity

A familiar display name, plausible subject line, or visible link label is not proof that a message came from Yahoo. A hyperlink can display one address while leading somewhere else. Yahoo’s phishing indicators can help, but the company describes its anti-phishing checks as a best guess and warns that suspicious messages may evade them. A purple check mark applies to certain brand logos; it is not a universal marker for Yahoo legal notices. Yahoo’s phishing guidance

If the email suggests your account was accessed

A terms update and an account-security alert are different issues. If the message claims someone accessed or changed your account, do not use its links to investigate. Go to Yahoo independently, check recent account activity, and secure the account if anything is unfamiliar. Review your recovery methods and enable two-step verification.
