RealDefense said it closed $30 million in financing from Sunflower Bank on October 3, 2022, to pursue further acquisitions in privacy and cybersecurity technology. The company reported that the financing brought its total raised across four transactions to $50 million. The announcement did not identify a specific target or disclose the financing’s structure or terms.
What RealDefense announced
Sunflower Bank’s October 3, 2022 announcement said it had provided RealDefense with $30 million in closed financing. RealDefense described the capital as a way to move quickly on acquisition opportunities; neither the lender nor the company named a deal that the money would fund. The announcement called the financing “financing” and did not disclose whether it was debt, equity, or a combination, or provide details such as interest rate, maturity, collateral, or covenants. At the time, RealDefense said its cumulative funding totaled $50 million across four transactions. The lender’s release also said the company had recently completed four software acquisitions. Those figures describe the situation reported in October 2022, not a complete financing or deal history through the present.

Why the company wanted acquisition capital
RealDefense sells privacy, security, and performance-optimization software and services for consumers and small businesses. The company’s stated approach was to acquire software businesses and try to improve their economics through cross-selling, upselling, technology licensing, and cost-effective customer support.

CEO Gary Guseinov said the company sought acquisition candidates where it could improve unit economics, raise average order value and customer lifetime value, and lower customer acquisition costs. In plain terms, RealDefense was looking for products that could be folded into its distribution and support operations, with the goal of earning more from customers while spending less to reach and serve them. The statement describes management’s intended model; it does not establish that every acquisition achieved those outcomes. Sunflower Bank’s announcement
How RealDefense described its reach
In the lender’s release, RealDefense said it distributed through more than 20,000 retail stores, resellers, licensing partners, and affiliates in 33 countries. These were company figures reproduced by Sunflower Bank in October 2022, not independently audited operating metrics. A contemporaneous SecurityWeek report also covered the financing and the company’s acquisition activity.

The 2022 financing announcement’s four recent acquisitions and the company’s current six-acquisition count are snapshots from different dates and may reflect different counting conventions. The later deals show that RealDefense continued expanding its portfolio, but available announcements do not establish that any particular acquisition was paid for with the $30 million.

SUPERAntiSpyware followed the financing
In January 2023, RealDefense announced its acquisition of SUPERAntiSpyware, calling it the fifth consumer software brand acquisition since 2017. The purchase consideration was undisclosed. The company’s release said the product had more than 65 million downloads and over one million active users; those are company-reported figures, not independently verified user counts. The announcement documents continued acquisition activity after the financing, but does not link the transaction’s funding to it. RealDefense’s January 2023 announcement distributed by Business Wire

- Amount and provider: $30 million in financing from Sunflower Bank, announced as closed October 3, 2022.
- Stated use: pursuing additional acquisitions in privacy and cybersecurity technology; no specific target was named.
- Capital reported at the time: $50 million across four financing transactions, according to RealDefense and Sunflower Bank.
- Acquisition strategy: management described improving acquired businesses through cross-selling, upselling, licensing, and support efficiencies, while seeking stronger customer economics.
- Terms not disclosed: the available announcement does not establish the financing’s legal structure, cost, maturity, security, or covenants.
The financing is therefore best understood as capital intended to support an acquisition-led growth strategy—not as a disclosed loan with known terms, an equity round with known investors, or funding for a particular named purchase. For additional contemporaneous context, the Los Angeles Business Journal’s November 2022 coverage described the company’s interest in complementary businesses and hiring software engineers and marketing professionals.
