Real Insurance Standard is an Australian pet insurance policy for cats and dogs that contributes toward eligible veterinary expenses. It reimburses up to 75% of eligible costs, subject to policy terms, an annual benefit limit of up to $12,000 and condition-specific sublimits. It is not full-bill reimbursement, and routine care is not its purpose.
What the Standard policy offers
The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd is the insurer. Its Target Market Determination (TMD), effective 31 March 2026, says PetSure acts for Hollard under binding authority; Real Pet Insurance policies are promoted and distributed by Greenstone Financial Services and authorised distribution partners. The TMD describes online, phone and comparison-tool distribution.
CHOICE’s accessible review lists a $0 excess, but that is a review-page summary, not a substitute for the policy schedule. Confirm the excess, limits and all contractual terms in the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and your pet’s schedule before buying.
How much it may pay
The TMD says Standard reimburses up to 75% of eligible veterinary expenses, subject to policy terms and applicable limits. CHOICE lists an annual benefit limit of up to $12,000. The percentage does not mean every bill is reimbursed at that rate: excluded treatment, waiting periods, sublimits and other policy conditions can reduce an accepted claim.
#1 Best Overall
CHOICE lists consultations capped at $300 and emergency treatment as covered. The TMD confirms that consultations, tick paralysis, emergency boarding and cruciate ligament conditions have sublimits, but exact amounts and applicability should be checked in the current PDS. CHOICE’s figures for certain conditions are summaries and may not match current terms.
Waiting periods and condition limits
CHOICE lists no waiting period for specified injuries, a 30-day wait for illness and a six-month wait for cruciate ligament conditions. Its list of specified injuries includes motor-vehicle incidents, burns or electrocution, insect or arachnid bite reactions, bone fractures, snake-bite toxicity, traumatic ligament or tendon injury, bite or fight wounds, lacerations or abrasions caused by external violence, and near drowning. Read the PDS for the exact definitions and exclusions; a condition’s name alone does not establish eligibility.
Rank #2
CHOICE lists cruciate ligament sublimits of up to $3,200 for treatment in the ACT, Northern Territory and Western Australia, and up to $2,600 in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria. It also lists up to $1,000 for tick paralysis. These are review-page summaries, not guaranteed current entitlements; verify the applicable amounts and regional rules in the PDS.
What is covered—and what is not
CHOICE lists cancer, ear and eye conditions, foreign-object ingestion, heart and joint conditions, hereditary conditions, patella luxation, intervertebral disc disease, skin conditions and vaccinatable conditions among the covered categories. Coverage remains subject to policy definitions, waiting periods, sublimits and exclusions.

CHOICE lists behavioural conditions, dental and oral health except oral tumours, pregnancy and obstetrics, routine care, alternative therapies, lost-animal benefits, telehealth veterinary services and legal liability as not covered. The TMD says the product is not designed for preventative treatment or general maintenance such as grooming and pet food. It also identifies chronic pre-existing conditions as outside the target market. Consult the current PDS for the policy’s specific pre-existing-condition rules and exclusions.
Eligibility and suitability
The TMD describes a target market of adults aged 18 or older with a domestic cat or dog legally available in Australia, over eight weeks old and younger than nine years at first policy commencement. CHOICE lists a minimum entry age of eight weeks and a maximum new-cover age of eight years. Because those age summaries differ, verify eligibility for your pet directly against the current PDS and insurer’s quote process.

The TMD says the policy is intended for people seeking a contribution toward eligible vet expenses who can afford premiums that may rise year to year, veterinary costs upfront unless using GapOnly, and expenses above the accepted claim. It may be a poor fit if you need full reimbursement, routine-care cover, cover for chronic pre-existing conditions, or insurance for an animal other than a cat or dog.
Claims and paying the vet
You may need to pay the veterinary bill first and wait for reimbursement, then fund any amount not accepted under the policy. The TMD says GapOnly may reduce the upfront payment to the gap amount when the service is available and used. CHOICE lists claims via a customer web portal, a vet-submitted e-claim, GapOnly at participating practices, or a paper form. Its listing gives GapOnly operating hours as Monday to Saturday, 8am–10pm AET, excluding NSW public holidays; check current availability and hours with the insurer or practice.

How to assess the policy before buying
- Get a current quote for your pet. Premiums are not established by the public review summary and depend on the particular circumstances and quote. Do not rely on an old or generic price.
- Read the current PDS and policy schedule. Check the reimbursement percentage, annual limit, excess, consultation and condition sublimits, waiting periods, age eligibility, pre-existing-condition rules and exclusions.
- Estimate the cash you may need. Consider the upfront vet bill, the share not reimbursed, costs above a sublimit and the possibility that premiums increase over time. Ask whether GapOnly is available at your usual veterinary practice.
- Compare like with like. Set the policy beside alternatives using the same factors: reimbursement rate, annual cap, sublimits, excess, waiting periods, age rules, exclusions, premium and cash-flow requirements. A lower benefit percentage or lower sublimits can mean lower premiums but more out-of-pocket costs; higher benefits or sublimits can mean higher premiums and less out-of-pocket exposure.
The TMD expressly says it does not provide financial product advice or take individual customers’ objectives, financial situation or needs into account. Treat it as a description of the product’s target market, not a personalized recommendation.
