Real Insurance Premium is a cat and dog policy that combines limited cover for specified injuries with broader illness cover. CHOICE’s 2026 review lists up to 80% of eligible vet bills, a $12,000 annual benefit limit and a $0 excess, but those figures do not mean every bill is reimbursed at that rate: sub-limits, waiting periods, exclusions and claim acceptance affect what you pay. The review’s rating and scores are members-only, so its public page does not establish an overall score or endorsement.
What does Real Insurance Premium cover?
CHOICE describes the policy as limited injury and comprehensive illness cover for cats and dogs. The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd is the insurer; PetSure acts for Hollard under binding authority, according to the product’s Target Market Determination (TMD). The TMD describes eligible veterinary expenses as contributions toward treatment costs, not a promise of full reimbursement.
The figures below are those listed in CHOICE’s review, accessed in 2026. Check the current Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), TMD and your quote for the terms that apply when you buy.

The TMD, dated 31 March 2026, independently describes up to 80% of eligible veterinary expenses up to $12,000 per policy period and notes sub-limits for consultations, tick paralysis, emergency boarding and cruciate ligament conditions. It does not set out the individual premium. Read the Target Market Determination.

What waiting periods and condition rules apply?
CHOICE lists different waiting periods by type of cover. An injury with no waiting period is still limited to specified events and policy conditions; it does not mean every accident is covered immediately.
- Specified injury events: no waiting period listed.
- Illness: 30-day waiting period listed.
- Cruciate ligament conditions: six-month waiting period listed, with a separate treatment sub-limit that varies by state or territory.
CHOICE says a pre-existing condition may be covered if it is temporary, fully cured and the pet has been symptom-free for 18 months. That wording does not guarantee acceptance of a particular condition or claim. Ask the insurer how it will assess your pet’s history and verify the applicable wording in the current PDS.
What is excluded or limited?
CHOICE lists behavioural conditions and dental or oral health conditions among the exclusions, and notes some limited routine-care options. The exact scope and any optional benefits depend on the current policy documents; do not assume routine, preventative or ownership costs are covered.
The TMD says the cover is not intended for people seeking protection for chronic pre-existing conditions, all accidents or illnesses, total reimbursement, or preventative and pet ownership expenses. It also identifies costs a policyholder may need to meet: premiums that can increase from year to year, vet bills paid upfront unless GapOnly is used, and amounts above an accepted claim. GapOnly availability depends on eligible veterinary-provider arrangements, so check whether your clinic participates.

Is the public CHOICE rating available?
CHOICE’s Expert Rating, cover score and out-of-pocket score are members-only on the review page. The publicly visible information is not enough to report those scores or characterize them as an endorsement. The page is useful for identifying listed benefits and limits, but it cannot by itself establish whether this policy is the best fit for a particular pet or budget.

There is no personalized premium or competitor quote in the available sources, so the policy cannot be ranked on price or overall value here. Compare quotes using the same pet details and quote date, then check the policy wording against the costs and risks you care about.

- Get quotes using the same pet’s species, breed, age, location and other requested details; record the quote date and payment frequency.
- Compare the premium alongside the reimbursement percentage, annual or policy-period cap, excess and applicable sub-limits.
- Check waiting periods, covered injury events, illness terms, exclusions and the policy’s rules for pre-existing conditions.
- Ask whether your veterinary clinic supports GapOnly and what you would need to pay upfront or for expenses above an accepted claim.
- Read the current PDS and TMD, and confirm that the quoted terms and eligibility apply before relying on any listed benefit.
CHOICE’s review is a secondary source for its listed product specifications. The TMD explains the target market and broad cover structure, but it is not a personalized quote or a substitute for the current PDS. See CHOICE’s Real Insurance Premium review.
