Yes—React looks like a durable choice for web development, and it can be worth learning in 2026 if it fits the work you want to do. Its scale, wide range of surrounding tools, reach into mobile and desktop through React Native, and continued technical investment all support that outlook. None of this makes React inevitable or the best choice for every project.

Why is React still so popular?

React’s scale helps explain why developers keep encountering it. At React Conf 2024, React team member Lauren Tan reported that React was downloaded more than 1 billion times in 2023. She also reported that 37% of new developers learn to program with React. These are figures announced by the React team, not an independent count of unique people or production applications; downloads can include repeated installs.

That large user base reinforces itself. More developers using React can mean more libraries, learning resources, and potential teammates for organizations adopting it. In turn, a broad set of tools and a familiar hiring pool can make React a lower-risk choice for a team that needs to build or maintain a web application. The feedback loop helps explain persistence, but it does not prove that React is the right technical fit for every project.

How broad is the ecosystem around React?

React is the UI layer, not a single prescribed application stack. Teams commonly combine it with separate tools for routing, data management, server rendering, and other needs. That flexibility gives teams choices, though it also means they must decide which pieces to use and how to keep them working together.

State of React 2025 reported the following usage figures among its survey respondents:

Tool Respondent usage
Create React App 86.9%
Next.js 80%
Redux 74.5%
React Router 72.2%
TanStack Query 68.1%

These figures indicate that respondents reported using a range of tools around React; they are not market-wide adoption rates, nor do they say which tool is best for a new project. Ecosystem breadth is an advantage when a team needs options, but it can also bring decisions about dependencies, conventions, and long-term maintenance.

Does React reach beyond websites?

React Native extends the ecosystem into mobile applications, and React team member Nicola Corti reported 78 million React Native downloads in 2023 at React Conf 2024. The conference recap cited use across Meta products and Microsoft contexts including the Windows Start Menu and Microsoft Office.

React Native is not a promise that a web application can be copied unchanged into a mobile app. It gives teams a way to use React concepts and share some code or expertise across platforms, while platform-specific interface and behavior still matter. For organizations building for web and mobile, that connection can make investment in React skills more broadly useful.

What do usage and retention surveys say?

State of JavaScript 2024 placed React among just three libraries—alongside Jest and Vite—that were above 50% on both usage and retention in its survey. Retention here is a survey measure of respondents’ willingness to use a technology again. It is a useful signal that many respondents both use React and view it favorably, not proof of technical superiority or a forecast that every developer will keep using it.

Survey scope matters. Devographics reported 7,870 voluntary responses for State of React 2024 and cautioned that the results represent a specific subset of developers, not the entire React ecosystem. Community surveys are valuable for understanding participants’ experience, but their numbers should not be read as a census of all developers or companies.

Is React still changing?

React’s durability is not based only on accumulated usage. At React Conf 2024, the team announced the React 19 release candidate and the React Compiler. In October 2024, the team released a compiler beta that supports React 17 and later through an optional runtime, with gradual adoption as its stated goal. Those announcements show active investment at that time; they are not a claim about the latest release status in 2026.

The gradual-adoption approach matters to existing teams: the compiler was presented as something applications and libraries could take up incrementally, rather than a forced all-at-once migration. React’s work on Server Components is another sign of ongoing changes to how applications can be structured and rendered. As with any evolving platform, teams should check current documentation and compatibility before choosing a specific version or architecture.

Should you learn React in 2026?

React is a sensible learning investment if you want to build interactive web interfaces, work with teams already using its ecosystem, or explore a path from web development into React Native. Its reported scale and retention make it likely that React knowledge will remain useful, though no survey or conference statistic guarantees a particular job or a technology’s future.

Learn the underlying JavaScript and web fundamentals alongside React. Then focus on the concepts that transfer across projects: composing interfaces from components, managing state, understanding data flow, and choosing supporting tools deliberately. This makes your skills less dependent on any single library or framework.

  • Look at the roles and projects you actually want to pursue, and check which technologies they use.
  • Choose a learning project that includes the kinds of interface and data problems you expect to encounter.
  • Learn enough about routing, data fetching, and deployment to understand how React fits into a complete application.
  • Revisit your stack choices as project requirements and the ecosystem change.

Is React better than Vue, Angular, or Svelte?

There is no universal winner. The evidence here supports React’s scale and ecosystem depth, but those advantages do not settle the choice for a particular team. React’s library-centered approach offers flexibility in assembling tools; a team may instead prefer an alternative whose conventions and project structure better match its needs. The right comparison depends on the application, the developers maintaining it, and the deployment targets.

  • Choose React when its ecosystem, existing team knowledge, or potential web-to-native reuse addresses a real project need.
  • Compare alternatives when the team values a different level of built-in structure, has stronger experience elsewhere, or has requirements better served by another stack.
  • Check migration costs before switching a working application simply because another technology is gaining attention. Existing code, team familiarity, and supporting tools are part of the decision.

React’s rise is not proof that alternatives have no place. It is evidence that React has built a durable position through adoption, a connected ecosystem, cross-platform options, and continued development—while leaving the final choice to the needs of the project.
