React Native is now owned by the independent React Foundation, hosted by the Linux Foundation. The change moves project ownership and ecosystem support out of Meta, but it does not put React Native’s technical direction under the Foundation board: the launch announcement said that direction would remain a separate, contributor-led process.
What does React Native joining the React Foundation mean?
It is an organizational change, not a change to how developers build React Native apps. Meta announced on October 7, 2025, that React and React Native would transition to a new foundation. On February 24, 2026, the React blog announced that the React Foundation had officially launched and that React, React Native, and JSX were owned by the independent foundation rather than Meta.
The Foundation is hosted by the Linux Foundation. Its purpose includes supporting project infrastructure, organizing React Conf, and creating initiatives for the ecosystem. Those responsibilities concern the projects’ organizational home and support; they do not, by themselves, determine technical priorities or release decisions.
Who sets React Native’s technical direction?
The Foundation’s board and the project’s technical governance are distinct. The February 2026 launch update said technical governance would remain independent from the Foundation board, with React contributors and maintainers continuing to set technical direction. A provisional leadership council was working out the structure for that governance.

That distinction matters: Foundation ownership does not mean board members vote on individual technical changes or dictate the roadmap. The launch update described the governance model as still being worked out, so it should not be read as a final account of every process or role.
What changed between the announcement and launch?
| Date | What was announced | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| October 7, 2025 | Meta said React and React Native, among other React ecosystem projects, would transition to the React Foundation. The proposed board included representatives of Amazon, Callstack, Expo, Meta, Microsoft, Software Mansion, and Vercel, with plans to expand. | A planned organizational transition and a separation between business governance and maintainer- and contributor-driven technical direction. |
| February 24, 2026 | The React blog announced the Foundation’s official launch, hosted by the Linux Foundation. It said React, React Native, and JSX were owned by the independent Foundation. It named eight Platinum founding members and Seth Webster as executive director. | The ownership transition had taken effect. The post still listed repository, website, and infrastructure transfers and other transition work as next steps. |
The eight Platinum founding members named at launch were Amazon, Callstack, Expo, Huawei, Meta, Microsoft, Software Mansion, and Vercel. The launch announcement’s list is not identical to the earlier proposed board list: it adds Huawei and does not describe the same set of organizations as a board roster.

What did Meta commit to?
In its October 7, 2025 announcement, Meta said its Foundation partnership included five years of funding totaling over $3 million and dedicated engineering support. It also said it would continue investing in React and using it across its products. Meta stated: “Meta will also continue to have a dedicated team of engineers working full-time on React and React Native.” That is Meta’s stated commitment in the 2025 announcement, not a claim that the Foundation owns or directs Meta’s engineering team.

The Foundation announcement should not be treated as a platform-support announcement. React Native’s official blog reported that official support for Meta Quest devices was announced at React Conf 2025, illustrating activity beyond the framework’s original Android and iOS focus. That platform news is separate from the Foundation’s ownership change and does not show that the transition itself added or removed platform support.

Where should developers go for current guidance?
Use the official React Native getting-started documentation for current setup and learning instructions. It is designed for learners with different experience levels, can be followed linearly or consulted by section, and lists JavaScript fundamentals as a prerequisite. The documentation was last updated August 12, 2026.
For historical background, React Native in Action by Nader Dabit is a hands-on trade paperback published by Manning in 2019. Its age makes it unsuitable as a guide to the Foundation’s current governance or recent setup and release requirements; rely on the official documentation for those.
