A clean JavaScript console does not rule out a crash: Android can terminate a React Native app because of a failure in native code, a native module, the runtime, or another platform library. To find the cause, capture the Android crash evidence, inspect its signal and faulting thread, and symbolize the native stack with the unstripped libraries from the exact build. Without that trace and matching symbols, the specific cause cannot be identified.

Why did my React Native app crash when JavaScript showed no error?

JavaScript exceptions and native process crashes happen at different layers. React Native DevTools helps debug React app concerns, but the React Native documentation is explicit: “React Native DevTools is designed for debugging React app concerns, and not to replace native tools.” For underlying platform layers, including native modules, it directs developers to Android Studio and Xcode debugging tools.

A missing JavaScript stack trace is a reason to inspect Android evidence, not proof by itself that the failure was native. Check whether Android recorded a process crash and examine the associated signal, thread, and native backtrace before deciding where to investigate.

How do I capture Android crash evidence?

Reproduce the failure while collecting Android logs, and preserve the app build that produced it. Android’s native crash documentation explains that a tombstone can include backtraces for all threads, register state, raw stack and memory dumps, and a memory map. These details can distinguish a useful native trace from a JavaScript-only view of the incident. See AOSP’s native crash debugging guide and the Android NDK debugging guide.

  1. Reproduce and capture: Use Android Studio or adb to collect logcat output around the crash, and retain the tombstone when available. Keep the lines before the termination as well as the crash block; an abort may be preceded by a message explaining why it happened.
  2. Record the build context: Save the exact app build, React Native and Android versions, device or emulator details, and ABI. Preserve the matching unstripped native libraries; a stack trace without its corresponding symbols may remain opaque or be misleading.
  3. Keep the original artifacts: Do not rebuild or replace the libraries before symbolication. Symbols must correspond to the binaries that ran when the crash occurred.

Apps running on Android 12 (API level 31) or later can access a native crash tombstone programmatically through ApplicationExitInfo.getTraceInputStream(). That platform capability is described in the Android NDK debugging documentation. The availability of that API does not make one collection route suitable for every app; local debugging and production reporting may be used together.

How do I read an Android native crash log?

Start with the signal and the faulting thread’s top frames, then use the surrounding log output to understand the context. A signal identifies a type of failure, but it does not by itself identify the responsible React Native module or source line.

Look for an abort pattern

AOSP describes SIGABRT with an abort frame in libc.so as a recognizable abort pattern. Check the log lines before the abort for context; a native assertion or explicit abort may have logged a message that explains the immediate trigger. This pattern tells you how the process ended, not necessarily which app-level dependency introduced the problem.

Inspect the faulting thread and surrounding frames

Read the backtrace for the thread named in the crash report, then consider other thread traces and the tombstone’s register and memory details. Frames may pass through system libraries before reaching app or module code, so do not assume that the first recognizable library name is the root cause. If the trace shows a memory fault or a different failure signal, follow the evidence in that trace rather than treating it as an abort.

At this stage, note the signal, thread, top frames, any preceding error messages, and the libraries present in the trace. Those observations guide symbolication and dependency investigation; they are not a diagnosis on their own.

How do I symbolicate a native Android stack trace?

Android’s ndk-stack tool can replace native addresses with source files and line numbers when given the corresponding unstripped libraries. Use the captured log or tombstone and symbols from the exact build that crashed. The Android documentation explains the tool and its input requirements in the ndk-stack guide.

ndk-stack -sym <directory-containing-matching-unstripped-libraries> -dump <captured-log-or-tombstone>

Replace the placeholders with your actual paths. The directory should contain unstripped libraries for the relevant ABI and build. For Android Gradle Plugin projects, the NDK documentation identifies the intermediates/cxx build tree as a place to look for unstripped libraries. Build configuration and architecture matter: symbols from another ABI or a later rebuild may not match the addresses in the crash and can produce no useful result or misleading locations.

Once the frames are symbolicated, use the file and line information to trace into the responsible native library or module. Check the source at the reported location and the call path around it, then investigate the module and its interactions with the runtime or platform code. A trace may point to app-owned native code, a third-party module, a runtime component, or another native library; the title of the crash alone cannot select among them.

Should I use a crash-reporting SDK for production crashes?

Manual capture is useful when you can reproduce the failure locally. A crash-reporting SDK can help collect evidence from user devices where reproduction is difficult, but it does not replace native stack analysis or the matching symbols needed to make addresses useful. The routes can complement one another.

Route Where it helps Evidence and symbol needs Trade-offs
Android logs and tombstones with ndk-stack Local reproduction on a device or emulator Android crash output and matching unstripped libraries; tombstones can provide all-thread and memory context Requires reproducing or otherwise collecting the crash and managing the exact build artifacts
Production crash reporting Crashes on user devices Depends on the SDK’s collection and symbol support; verify that the relevant native evidence and symbols are available Requires integration and ongoing configuration; vendor capabilities and version requirements can change

Sentry’s product page describes its React Native offering as supporting native stack traces and source maps; those are vendor claims, not an independent comparison. Sentry materials also describe tombstone capture through ApplicationExitInfo, but the cited blog dated April 15, 2026 and changelog dated February 17, 2026 report different minimum SDK versions. The available information does not resolve that discrepancy, so consult current Sentry React Native product information and vendor documentation before relying on a specific version threshold.

What if the trace points to a memory error?

If the evidence suggests memory corruption or another native memory issue, Android’s NDK documentation describes AddressSanitizer (ASan) and Hardware AddressSanitizer (HWASan) as memory-debugging options. Choose and configure a tool appropriate to the build and device setup, then reproduce the failure with it enabled. A sanitizer can help expose memory errors during debugging; it does not establish that memory corruption is the cause unless the instrumented run produces supporting evidence.

For device-specific failures, try reproducing on a physical Android device as well as an emulator when practical. No particular phone is required: the documented workflow uses Android tools and crash artifacts, and an emulator may be enough for a reproducible issue.
