RCS is a carrier-supported messaging service that gives green-bubble conversations on iPhone features such as high-resolution media, read receipts, and typing indicators. To turn it on, go to Settings > Apps > Messages > RCS Messaging and switch it on. You need iOS 18 or later, an eligible messaging or mobile-data plan, and a carrier that supports RCS in your region.

What RCS means on iPhone

RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. On iPhone, it is a network-provided option for Messages conversations that are not using iMessage, commonly chats with Android users. Apple says RCS can send texts, high-resolution photos and videos, and links, alongside delivery receipts, read receipts, and typing indicators. RCS messages still appear in green bubbles; they do not become iMessages. Apple’s RCS messaging guide explains the feature and its availability.

Apple’s implementation follows the GSMA RCS Universal Profile. The GSMA says this supports features such as typing indicators, read receipts, higher-quality media sharing, and improved group messaging across iOS and Android, when supported by the networks involved. GSMA’s announcement describes the cross-platform update.

What changes when you use RCS

Compared with SMS and MMS, RCS can make a green-bubble chat feel more like a modern messaging app. The available features depend on carrier and device support.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  • Media: Send high-resolution photos and videos rather than relying on the lower-quality handling associated with MMS.
  • Message status: See delivery receipts and, when available, read receipts.
  • Typing indicators: See when the other person is composing a message, if their service supports it.
  • Links and groups: Send links and get improved group messaging behavior across platforms where RCS is supported.

RCS improves messaging between different platforms, but it does not remove the green bubble or make the conversation an iMessage thread.

How to turn on RCS on iPhone

  1. Update the iPhone to iOS 18 or later.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Messages.
  3. Tap RCS Messaging and switch it on.
  4. Allow time for activation. Apple notes that a short delay can occur.

The iPhone also needs an eligible text-messaging or mobile-data plan, and the wireless provider must support RCS on iPhone in the country or region. Apple’s carrier support information lists availability by region and provider.

RCS versus iMessage

Both services can support richer messaging features, but they serve different purposes. iMessage is Apple’s messaging service for Apple devices; RCS is designed to improve conversations across platforms and depends on carrier support.

How it appears Green bubbles in Messages. Blue bubbles in Messages.
Service dependency Requires a supporting wireless provider and region. Apple’s messaging service; it does not depend on a carrier offering RCS.
Media and chat features High-resolution media, receipts, typing indicators, links, and improved group messaging may be available, depending on support. Apple’s messaging features are available in iMessage conversations.
End-to-end encryption Conditional: encrypted RCS requires iOS 26.5 and a provider that supports it; confirm the lock icon. RCS encryption status does not apply to iMessage. Apple describes iMessage as end-to-end encrypted.

Are RCS messages on iPhone encrypted?

Do not assume every RCS conversation is end-to-end encrypted. Apple’s current guidance says encrypted RCS requires iOS 26.5 and a provider that supports encryption. When an RCS conversation is encrypted, Messages displays a lock icon. If there is no lock, do not treat the conversation as end-to-end protected. Apple’s carrier information distinguishes RCS support from end-to-end encrypted RCS support.

On May 11, 2026, Google announced that end-to-end encrypted RCS began rolling out in beta for iPhone users on iOS 26.5 with supported carriers, and for Android users using the latest Google Messages. Google says encryption is enabled by default as eligible conversations receive the rollout; the lock icon identifies an encrypted chat. That beta rollout does not mean encryption is available with every carrier or conversation. Google’s announcement gives the rollout details.

The GSMA says newer RCS specifications define end-to-end encryption using the Messaging Layer Security protocol. GSMA’s specification announcement describes that standard; a specification does not itself establish that encryption is enabled for a particular conversation.

Why RCS may be missing or not working

  • The iPhone is on an older iOS version: RCS requires iOS 18 or later. The current encrypted-RCS beta requires iOS 26.5 or later.
  • The carrier or region does not support it: RCS availability is provider- and region-specific. Check Apple’s current carrier table for the exact provider and country.
  • The plan may not qualify: Apple lists a text-messaging or mobile-data plan as a requirement.
  • Activation may still be in progress: Apple notes a short delay can occur after enabling RCS.
  • The carrier may need to provision the line: If the RCS Messaging option is absent, ask the provider whether RCS is supported for the line and whether activation is pending.

Apple’s carrier tables separately identify providers that support RCS and those that support end-to-end encrypted RCS in beta. The two labels are not interchangeable: a carrier can support RCS without appearing as a provider for the encrypted beta.
