Google Drive for desktop is the better default for most people who want a familiar Finder or File Explorer experience, cloud-first streaming, and a simple option for keeping a complete offline copy. rclone is better for technically comfortable users who need explicit command-line control, automation, one-way copy jobs, or carefully managed two-way synchronization.

Neither tool is universally faster or safer. The right choice depends on whether you need files offline, how much local disk space you have, whether you use shared drives or Google Docs, and how comfortable you are previewing and recovering synchronization changes. This guide explains the differences and shows how to choose without treating a sync as a backup.

The short answer

Choose Google Drive for desktop when you want an integrated desktop application with two clearly presented modes: stream My Drive files from the cloud to save local space, or mirror them so every file is stored locally and remains available offline. Choose rclone when you want a command-line tool that can copy, synchronize, mount, automate, and connect Google Drive with local paths or other storage targets.

Choose Google Drive for desktop if you need… Choose rclone if you need…
A normal Finder or File Explorer workflow Scripts, scheduled jobs, and explicit source/destination control
Simple streaming or mirroring controls copy, sync, and advanced bisync behavior
Built-in offline selection Custom local/cloud workflows and automation
Minimal configuration The ability to inspect and preview changes before applying them

Google Drive for desktop is an integrated sync client. rclone is a programmable file-transfer and synchronization tool. An rclone mount can make a remote appear like a drive, but it does not reproduce every behavior of Google’s desktop application, and mounting is not the same as maintaining a local mirror.

How Google Drive for desktop stores files

Google offers two modes for My Drive: streaming and mirroring. The choice changes where the working copy lives, how offline access works, and how much disk space is consumed.

Streaming: cloud-first files with a small local footprint

Streaming keeps My Drive files primarily in Google’s cloud. Drive for desktop uses local storage for files you open and for recently or frequently used content, so the entire account does not have to occupy the computer’s disk. A streamed file normally needs an internet connection unless you explicitly make it available offline, and streamed files generally require Drive for desktop to be running.

Streaming is useful when the account is larger than the computer’s free space, when several computers need access to the same cloud data, or when you want to avoid maintaining a second full copy. It is less suitable for a laptop that must work without connectivity or for applications that constantly read and rewrite large files.

Mirroring: a complete local copy

Mirroring stores files both on the computer and in the cloud. Google’s help documentation states: “Mirrored files will always be stored on your computer and in the cloud.” The result is full offline access and a normal local folder that applications can read without downloading files on demand. Mirroring consumes local disk space equal to the files kept locally, subject to the filesystem’s overhead.

Google notes that applications involving extensive writing, video editing, or high-resolution photo editing can be faster with mirrored files because the application works against local data rather than a cloud-backed stream. You still need enough free space for the local copy; an external drive can provide capacity, but it is an optional storage choice rather than a requirement of either product.

What can and cannot be streamed or mirrored

  • My Drive can be streamed or mirrored.
  • Shared drives can only be streamed in Drive for desktop.
  • Folders on other computers and backed-up USB devices can only be streamed.
  • Local folders on your computer can only be mirrored.

That distinction matters if your plan assumes every Google Drive location can have a complete offline duplicate. A shared drive, for example, does not become a mirrored local folder through Drive for desktop’s mode switch.

Changing between streaming and mirroring safely

Mode changes can move or download a large amount of data. They can also expose local files that have not finished uploading. Follow this sequence:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Drive for desktop’s settings or Preferences and review the current syncing status.
  2. Wait for pending uploads and downloads to finish. Do not proceed while files show unsynced changes.
  3. Select the desired mode for My Drive: streaming for cloud-first access or mirroring for a full local copy.
  4. If you choose mirroring, select the local folder and confirm that the destination has sufficient free space.
  5. Allow the initial download to complete before disconnecting the computer or moving the folder.

Google warns that deleting or moving the old mirrored folder before it has fully uploaded can lose files that exist only locally. When switching to mirroring, Drive downloads My Drive files into the selected folder. If an existing local file differs from the cloud version, Drive may keep both versions rather than silently replacing one.

How rclone’s operations differ

rclone uses a configured remote name and a path, then applies an operation you choose. The operation is not a minor setting: it determines whether files are only added, whether the destination can be changed or deleted, and whether both sides are compared.

Command What it does Risk to understand
copy Copies files from a source to a destination and skips files that are already copied. It does not make the destination an exact replica; files that exist only at the destination are not removed by the basic copy operation.
sync Makes the destination identical to the source, modifying the destination as needed. Changes and deletions at the destination can be propagated to match the source.
bisync Synchronizes changes between two paths. It is an advanced, stateful workflow. Conflicts, resync choices, or an incorrect path can overwrite a differing version.

The rclone documentation recommends using the interactive flag while learning: rclone --interactive (or -i) helps avoid accidental data loss. A dry run is another essential check before a real operation.

Setting up a practical rclone workflow

rclone requires more decisions than Drive for desktop, but that control is its main advantage. A cautious first setup looks like this:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install rclone for your operating system and run rclone config.
  2. Create a new remote, choose Google Drive as the storage provider, and complete the browser-based authorization.
  3. Give the remote a short, recognizable name, then verify access with a read-only command such as rclone lsd remote: or rclone ls remote:path.
  4. Choose the operation that matches your intent. Use copy for additive transfers, sync only when the destination should follow the source exactly, and bisync only after reading its state and conflict rules.
  5. Preview the operation with a dry run, for example rclone sync remote:path /local/path --dry-run. Review every planned deletion and replacement.
  6. Run the real command only after the preview matches your expectation. Keep logs if the job will run unattended.
  7. For recurring work, schedule the command with your operating system’s task scheduler and make sure the account, network, mounted paths, and permissions will exist when the job starts.

The exact local-storage result depends on the workflow. A copy or sync to a local path creates local files; a mount presents remote content through a virtual filesystem, while applications and operating systems decide how that mounted content behaves. rclone therefore has no single equivalent to Google’s “stream” and “mirror” switch.

Understanding bisync before using it

bisync is designed for two-way synchronization, but it is not a casual replacement for an always-running desktop client. It maintains state between runs and has explicit resynchronization and conflict behavior.

Initial resynchronization

The first bisync setup requires an initial resync. That establishes the comparison state for the two paths. Subsequent runs normally omit the resync flag so that changes can be detected from the saved state.

Dry-run and conflict review

Run a dry run and inspect the proposed actions before applying them. If a file changed on both sides, the conflict policy and your resync choice determine which version survives. A resync can overwrite a differing version, so do not use it as a routine fix without first preserving or inspecting the files involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why mount plus bisync is not identical to Drive for desktop

A mounted remote and a bisync job divide the work between a virtual filesystem and a scheduled synchronization process. Drive for desktop continuously integrates file access, caching, and status in one application. With rclone, you must decide when bisync runs, where its state is stored, how a mount is started, and what happens when either side is offline. The workflow can be powerful, but it requires operational discipline.

Google Drive-specific issues in rclone

Google Docs and native files

Google’s native Docs, Sheets, and Slides do not behave exactly like ordinary binary files. The rclone Google Drive backend documents unknown sizes for native Google Docs in some operations. The files can transfer with copy and sync, but downloading them through a mount can fail or produce a zero-sized file depending on the application and operating system.

Bisync supports Google Docs starting with rclone v1.66. When syncing to a non-Drive backend, rclone’s default export formats include DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and SVG. URL shortcuts export as read-only placeholders on the non-Drive side. If editable native documents are central to your workflow, test the exact applications and export formats before moving production data.

Rate limits and many small files

Google Drive can rate-limit requests. A workload containing many small files may take longer because it generates many API operations, and the backend documentation warns that duplicate uploads can occur. Do not infer a general speed winner from the fact that one tool feels faster for a particular folder; workload, file size, network conditions, and API responses all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Client-ID change during 2026

rclone’s Google Drive backend documentation says the shared rclone client ID is being retired during 2026 and advises users to create and use their own client ID to avoid interruption. This is a time-sensitive setup requirement. Check the current Google Drive backend instructions when configuring a new remote rather than relying on an older tutorial.

Offline access, disk space, and application compatibility

Need Drive for desktop rclone
Complete local copy Use mirroring; every mirrored file is kept locally and in the cloud. Copy or sync the remote to a local path; the amount of local data is determined by your command and destination.
Save local space Use streaming, with offline exceptions for selected files. Use a mount or transfer only the paths needed; caching and application behavior depend on the setup.
Work without internet Mirrored files are offline by default; streamed files must be made available offline. Local copies are available locally. A mount generally depends on remote access unless files have separately been copied.
Large, frequently rewritten files Google says mirroring can be faster for extensive writing, video editing, and high-resolution photo editing. Performance depends on mount, cache, filesystem, network, and command design; the official material does not establish a universal speed result.

On macOS, File Provider behavior and offline status can affect how streamed files appear and when they are available. Confirm that files marked for offline use are actually present before traveling or disconnecting from the network.

Sync is not backup

Both approaches can propagate mistakes. A mirrored folder is still synchronized with the cloud, so a deletion or unwanted edit can spread. rclone’s sync deliberately changes the destination to match the source, and bisync can apply changes in either direction.

  • Keep an independent backup or versioned copy for important files.
  • Use --dry-run before the first real copy, sync, or bisync run.
  • Use -i or --interactive while learning rclone.
  • Start with a test folder containing representative documents, media, and a Google-native file.
  • Review logs and investigate unexpected deletions before rerunning a command.

If a Drive-for-desktop mode change appears to have stalled, leave the original folder in place, reconnect the account, and allow pending uploads to finish before moving or deleting anything. If an rclone run proposes unexpected changes, stop, preserve both sides, and inspect the command paths and dry-run output instead of forcing a resync.

Your laptop has limited storage

Start with streaming, then make only essential files available offline. Mirroring is appropriate only when the complete My Drive copy fits comfortably on the local disk or an attached drive.

You need a guaranteed local working set

Use mirroring if the files are in My Drive and the local capacity is available. For shared drives, which are stream-only in Drive for desktop, a separately managed rclone copy to a local path may meet the offline requirement, but it becomes your responsibility to schedule and verify that copy.

You need one-way publication or archival jobs

Use rclone. A command such as copy clearly expresses an additive transfer, while sync can produce an exact destination when that is genuinely what you want. Preview and log the operation before scheduling it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need two-way synchronization between a local folder and Drive

Use rclone bisync only if you can manage initial resync, ongoing state, dry runs, conflicts, and recovery. If you do not want to own those decisions, Google Drive for desktop’s integrated workflow is safer operationally, even though it offers less command-level control.

A decision checklist

  • Offline requirement: Must every file be available without internet, or only a selected subset?
  • Disk capacity: Can the computer hold a complete mirror, including future growth?
  • Location type: Are the files in My Drive, a shared drive, another computer, or a backed-up USB device?
  • Document types: Do you depend on native Google Docs through a mount or on exported Office formats?
  • Automation: Do you need scheduled commands, logs, and reproducible source/destination paths?
  • Risk tolerance: Will you inspect dry runs and maintain an independent backup?

Final recommendation

For most households, students, and office users, start with Google Drive for desktop: stream when disk space matters, mirror when offline access and local application performance matter, and let the integrated client manage ordinary desktop access.

Choose rclone when the benefit of explicit control outweighs setup and safety work. It is the stronger tool for scripted copies, custom local/cloud layouts, and advanced bidirectional workflows, but its flexibility means you must understand destination changes, deletion behavior, Google Docs handling, rate limits, client-ID requirements, and bisync recovery. There is no evidence of a universal performance winner, so base the decision on your files, connectivity, storage, and willingness to operate the workflow deliberately.

For authoritative details, consult Google’s stream and mirror guide, its advanced Drive for desktop guide, and rclone’s documentation and bisync reference.
