The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) raised the policy repo rate by 25 basis points, from 5.25% to 5.5%, on October 7, 2026, according to Business Standard. The report also says the MPC changed its stance to “calibrated tightening.” The RBI’s October resolution was not available in the sources checked, so those details are attributed to the news report rather than presented as confirmed wording from the central bank.
What the October 2026 decision reports
- Repo rate: Up 25 basis points, from 5.25% to 5.5%, according to Business Standard’s October 7 report.
- Vote: The report says the increase was unanimous.
- Stance: Business Standard’s headline describes the change as “calibrated tightening.” The RBI’s own October statement was not located, so its precise official language is unverified here.
A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point: 25 basis points equal 0.25 percentage points.
How this compares with the previous MPC decision
The RBI’s FAQ lists the repo rate at 5.25% and the standing deposit facility (SDF) rate at 5.00% as of June 30, 2026. A reproduction of the August 3–5 MPC resolution says the committee kept the repo rate at 5.25% and retained a neutral stance; that resolution scheduled its next meeting for October 5–7.
The June figures are dated pre-meeting context, not confirmation of the policy rates after the October decision. In particular, the sources here do not establish October updates to the SDF, marginal standing facility (MSF), or Bank Rate.

What “calibrated tightening” means—and what remains unclear
In general, a tightening stance signals a policy direction aimed at making financial conditions less accommodative. “Calibrated” suggests an approach adjusted in measured steps rather than a claim that every policy instrument changes by the same amount. In this case, however, the phrase is reported by Business Standard; without the RBI’s October resolution, the committee’s own explanation of the stance cannot be confirmed.
The available October report establishes the reported repo-rate move and unanimity, but not the MPC’s reasoning, inflation or growth projections, any accompanying policy-rate decisions, or the full vote record. Those details should not be inferred from the reported change alone.
Could the rate increase change loan or deposit rates?
The repo rate is a central-bank policy rate that can influence short-term funding costs and, through financial-market transmission, lending and deposit rates. The sources do not say how quickly or by how much individual banks or other lenders will reprice products after this decision.
A borrower’s result depends on the loan’s benchmark, spread, reset date, and contract terms. Deposit rates are likewise set by financial institutions and may respond differently. The reported 0.25-percentage-point increase is therefore not a promise that every loan payment or deposit return will change by that amount, or change immediately.
