Ray tracing models how light travels through a scene, but a game that advertises ray tracing usually does not render every pixel with rays. Most real-time games use a hybrid: rasterization draws much of the scene, and ray tracing adds selected effects such as reflections or shadows. The visual result and performance depend on the effect, implementation, settings, and hardware—not on the label alone.
What ray tracing actually means
Ray tracing is a rendering technique that follows rays through a scene to simulate aspects of light interacting with objects. It can help produce effects such as reflections and shadows, but “ray tracing” is not a synonym for photorealism, nor does the term alone tell you how much of an image was rendered that way.
In a real-time game, rasterization commonly handles most of the scene while ray tracing supplies one or more selected effects. Khronos describes this hybrid approach as a typical use for Vulkan ray tracing in games. Its examples also include generating shadow maps and baking dynamic lighting. Khronos: Ray Tracing in Vulkan.

A selective ray-tracing implementation uses rays for chosen tasks, such as reflections or shadows. Path tracing uses ray-based sampling to approximate broader light transport. A feature marketed as ray tracing is not necessarily path tracing, and the names alone do not establish which approach will look better in a particular scene.

Why games combine ray tracing with rasterization
Rasterization is an efficient way to turn scene geometry into pixels, while ray tracing can handle effects that benefit from tracing light paths. Combining them lets a game use rays where the developer chooses rather than requiring the entire frame to follow a ray-based pipeline. The exact mix differs by game and feature, so two games with a “ray tracing” setting may be doing different work.
- Reflections: Rays can be used to represent reflected scene details.
- Shadows: Ray tracing can support shadow effects or shadow-map generation.
- Lighting: Dynamic light baking is another use identified by Khronos.
These examples describe possible workloads, not a promise that every game implements all of them. Check the specific game’s graphics options and documentation to see which effects its setting controls.

What denoising does—and what it cannot promise
Ray-traced images can look noisy when they are produced from relatively few rays. Denoising processes the sampled result to reduce visible noise, which can make an image usable with fewer rays. NVIDIA describes denoising this way, and Khronos discusses denoising and adaptive sampling as optimization techniques. NVIDIA: Ray Tracing, Your Questions Answered and Khronos Vulkan Documentation: Ray Tracing.

Denoising is a tradeoff, not a guarantee of a clean image or a particular frame rate. The outcome depends on the denoiser and its integration; artifacts may remain, and temporal techniques can depend on motion and previous frames. Adaptive sampling and denoising are implementation choices, not identical features that every renderer handles the same way.

Does ray tracing make games slower?
It can add substantial computation, but there is no useful universal FPS penalty. The impact depends on the game or renderer, which effects are enabled, scene complexity, resolution, quality settings, GPU, driver, and implementation. A result measured in one workload does not establish how another will perform.
For a meaningful comparison, look for current tests of the exact game or creative application, named hardware, resolution, and settings you care about. Compare image quality as well as frame rate or render time, and note whether the test uses denoising or other upscaling and sampling features. A vendor demonstration or a result from a different scene is not a substitute for that evidence.

APIs, GPUs, and application support
Vulkan and Microsoft DirectX Raytracing (DXR) are API paths for ray-tracing workloads. NVIDIA OptiX is another API used for ray-tracing applications based on CUDA. Khronos describes Vulkan ray tracing as an extension framework integrated with Vulkan and discusses portability goals for content built with proprietary APIs such as DXR and OptiX. Its 2020 release announcement names NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel in the ecosystem context. Khronos: Vulkan Ray Tracing Release Announcement.
API support does not mean every game or renderer uses the same effects, or that performance will be equal across hardware. Compatibility depends on the application, its implementation, the API path, GPU, and driver. NVIDIA says its RTX GPUs include dedicated RT Cores designed for real-time ray-traced experiences; that is a description of NVIDIA’s own product line, not a neutral comparison or proof that a particular card is the best choice.

Ray tracing beyond games
Ray tracing is also used in offline production rendering and light-map baking. These workloads may prioritize a finished image or baked lighting rather than meeting a game’s interactive frame-time target. Khronos lists both as uses for ray-tracing technology, alongside real-time applications. Khronos: Vulkan Ray Tracing Release Announcement.
For creative software, verify the renderer’s current support, required API and hardware, and whether it uses a denoiser or other sampling techniques. Library support and versions can change; Khronos documentation names Open Image Denoise and NVIDIA Real-Time Denoisers as examples, not as a guarantee that a particular application includes or supports them.
How to evaluate a ray-tracing claim
- Identify the workload: Is the claim about a specific game effect, a full renderer, or an offline render?
- Check the approach: Is it selective ray tracing in a hybrid pipeline or broader path tracing?
- Match the test conditions: Look for the named application, hardware, resolution, quality settings, and driver.
- Inspect the image tradeoff: Consider noise, denoising artifacts, reflections or shadows, and motion—not just a frame-rate figure.
- Confirm compatibility: Check the application’s requirements and support for the relevant API and GPU.
If you are choosing a graphics card, first identify the games or creative applications you actually use, then consult their published requirements and current workload-specific tests. The technology description alone does not establish a best GPU, model ranking, price, or value.
