Raxio opened its Mozambique data centre, MZ1, at Beluluane Industrial Park near Maputo on 28 May 2024. The often-cited US$290 million figure refers to Raxio’s planned multi-country African data-centre programme—not the cost of this one facility. MozParks reported that MZ1 represented an investment of more than US$20 million.
What opened in Mozambique, and where is it?
Raxio Mozambique (MZ1) is a purpose-built, carrier-neutral colocation data centre at Beluluane Industrial Park, on the outskirts of Maputo. Raxio described it at launch as Mozambique’s first Tier III Uptime Certified data centre. The company’s 28 May 2024 opening announcement gives the event date and location; MozParks’ inauguration report put the facility’s investment at more than US$20 million.
Raxio’s 2025 site data sheet places MZ1 about 20 km from Maputo’s central business district and along major fibre routes. The company points to Maputo’s proximity to three subsea cable landings, including 2Africa, as a way to support international connectivity and diverse routes in Southern Africa. That is Raxio’s connectivity rationale, not an independently measured performance comparison.

The headline figure is a rounded description of a broader African expansion plan. Bloomberg News reported at the 2024 opening that Raxio’s US$290 million strategy covered ten data-centre facilities under its then-current debt and equity funding package. The IFC project disclosure describes the corresponding programme as ten planned carrier-neutral metro-edge centres with 13.5 MW of combined capacity and an estimated total cost of US$293 million. Neither figure is the construction cost of MZ1.

The IFC disclosure distinguishes the estimated programme budget from particular financing approvals. Its financing table lists US$88 million in equity, US$165 million in senior debt and US$40 million in subordinated debt, totalling the estimated US$293 million. It also records up to US$100 million of IFC investment for the phased programme and a US$70 million board-approved IFC loan figure. These are programme-level estimates and financing measures, not an MZ1-only price.
Raxio reported a different, later measure on 13 July 2026: more than US$380 million in committed capital across the company after further shareholder investment from Roha and Meridiam. The company also cited an earlier US$100 million IFC package and debt from Proparco and EAAIF. Committed capital at company level should not be confused with the original ten-centre programme estimate.
What are MZ1’s stated capacity and specifications?
Raxio’s version 2 Mozambique site data sheet, published in 2025, describes a two-floor facility with 2,000 m² of white space, 54U racks measuring 600 × 1,200 mm, capacity for up to 400 racks and a stated range of 4–21 kW per rack. These are operator-published specifications; they do not establish how much capacity is currently installed, occupied or available for sale.

The data sheet carries a Tier III Standard label, while Raxio’s launch release calls the site Tier III Uptime Certified. Those are the company’s descriptions; the available specifications do not provide independent operational uptime or energy-performance results.
Who can use the facility, and what services are offered?
The facility is aimed at organisations that need to house equipment, connect networks or serve users in Mozambique and the wider region. IFC lists potential customer categories including SMEs, hyperscalers, internet service providers, telecom operators, financial-services firms, regional carriers, content delivery networks, cloud-services providers and mobile operators. This is a range of customer types identified for the programme, not a published MZ1 customer roster.
Raxio lists colocation, cross-connects, active and dark fibre, remote hands, shift-and-lift, caging and customer spaces among MZ1’s services. At opening, the company said eight telecom and connectivity providers had signed up; its later site sheet lists eight providers terminating fibre. Those source-dated counts describe the launch and the data sheet, and do not guarantee current provider availability.

Raxio positions MZ1 for both primary infrastructure and disaster recovery. Its shared-infrastructure proposition is that customers can avoid building and operating a dedicated data centre and gain connectivity and flexibility; actual cost, application performance and suitability depend on a customer’s requirements and contract.

What benefits does Raxio claim—and what is established?
Raxio says MZ1’s location near fibre routes and subsea cable landings can improve access to international and regional connectivity. The company also said in its May 2024 announcement that a high proportion of Mozambique’s electricity is renewable and that a high proportion of the facility’s power would come from renewable sources, combining hydro-generated grid power and local solar. It described its design and equipment choices as adapted to local conditions and asserted strong power-usage effectiveness, but did not publish a numerical PUE result in that announcement.
IFC presents the wider programme’s intended development benefits as better access to data-hosting services, increased availability of digital services and productivity, and stronger competition in markets where colocation is underdeveloped. Those are anticipated impacts, not measured outcomes attributed to MZ1.

How does MZ1 fit into Raxio’s current African footprint?
In its July 2026 update, Raxio said it operated facilities in Uganda, Ethiopia, Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Côte d’Ivoire and Angola, with Tanzania in development. It also reported that contracted power in the first half of 2026 was six times the amount in the corresponding period of 2025. These are company-reported portfolio figures, not independently audited measures of demand or facility performance.
For a business assessing MZ1, the useful comparison points are the available carriers and interconnection options, power and cooling design, proximity to fibre routes, and the capacity and services required. The published material does not establish competitor prices or independently tested performance, so it cannot show that MZ1 is cheaper, faster or more reliable than another provider.
