A 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Twister Special reportedly resurfaced in 2024 after its last registration in 1984. The automatic 428 Super Cobra Jet car was described as unusually well-preserved, with its Arkansas inspection sticker and 1984 plates still present. Those details come from SlashGear’s report; the car’s identity, ownership history, and originality have not been independently verified here.
What is a 1970 Mustang Twister Special?
The Twister Special was a regional 1970 Mustang Mach 1 promotion sold through Ford’s Kansas City sales district, rather than a regular nationwide trim. Its name and tornado-themed graphics tied the cars to the region. MotorTrend describes the graphics as a redesign of stripes originally intended for a planned pace-car program, which did not proceed as expected; the Kansas City district then adopted the promotion. The cars also had a functional Shaker hood scoop, according to MotorTrend’s history.
The American Muscle Car Museum says the cars debuted at Ford’s Total Performance Day at Kansas City International Raceway on November 7, 1969. Its account describes 96 Grabber Orange Mach 1s, split between 428 Super Cobra Jet and 351 Cleveland 4V engines. The museum also reports that the cars were offered with either a C6 automatic or a four-speed manual; it does not establish how many were built with each engine and transmission combination. Read the museum’s description.

The reported production figure is 96 Mustang Mach 1 Twister Specials. That count comes from the American Muscle Car Museum’s vehicle description. MotorTrend separately reports that 90 Calypso Coral 429 SCJ Torino Cobras appeared at the same event; those were Torinos, not additional Mustang Twister Specials.

For an individual car, the production figure alone does not prove authenticity. A reproduced Marti Report for a different Twister Special, VIN 0F05R118914, illustrates the kind of factory-build documentation that may record details such as engine, paint, district, and Twister Special designation. It is not a record for the car that resurfaced in 2024. View that separate Marti Report.
Was the featured car really parked for 40 years?
SlashGear reports that the one-owner Mach 1 was last registered in 1984 and resurfaced in 2024, which is the basis for the rounded “40-year-old time capsule” description. The report identifies it as an automatic 428 Super Cobra Jet example and notes the 1984 plates and Arkansas inspection sticker. The elapsed-time wording is not a separately verified storage record: the cited account does not independently establish where the car was kept throughout that period or whether it was driven while unregistered. SlashGear’s report on the find is the source for those details.

Is this the museum car or the Mecum auction car?
No. The 2024 story concerns one specific reported garage find. The American Muscle Car Museum describes a separate 428-powered Twister Special, and Mecum’s January 2023 Kissimmee listing is for another 1970 Twister Special. Mecum says its auction descriptions and photographs are supplied by consignors and are not verified or guaranteed by the auction company, so that listing should not be treated as independent proof about the newly reported car.
What would establish the car’s identity and originality?
The recent report describes the car as original, but that description is not the same as independent authentication. A buyer or historian would want to match the vehicle’s VIN and factory build records to the claimed Mach 1, engine, and Kansas City Twister Special specification, then inspect the car and its components for evidence of original or replacement parts. A Marti Report for another car can show what documentation may look like, but it cannot authenticate this one. The available account does not provide a verified sale price or public registration file for the featured car.
