A ransomware group called Mogilevich claimed it stole 189 GB of Epic Games data, including passwords and source code. But a February 28, 2024 report did not verify the alleged theft, and Epic said there was zero evidence supporting the claim at that time. The report is historical, not a current breach-status update.
Did Epic Games get hacked?
The available report establishes that Mogilevich made a theft claim—not that Epic Games was breached. HotHardware reported on February 28, 2024, that the group said it had taken data from Epic. The report did not independently verify that the group possessed Epic data or that any information had been stolen.

Epic Games Newsroom’s response, as quoted by HotHardware, was: “There is zero evidence right now that the ransomware claims from Mogilevich are legitimate.” Epic also reportedly said Mogilevich had not contacted the company or provided proof. These statements describe Epic’s position at the time of the report.
What did Mogilevich claim it stole?
The group claimed it had taken 189 GB of data. Its reported list of alleged material included:
#1 Best Overall
- Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
- Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
- If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
- Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
- Redemption: Online
- Email addresses
- Passwords
- Full names
- Payment information
- Source code
- Other unspecified data
Those categories and the 189 GB figure came from Mogilevich’s claim as reported by HotHardware; they were not independently confirmed measurements or verified contents. The report did not establish that customer passwords, payment information, or source code had been exposed.
What evidence was offered?
HotHardware reported that BleepingComputer’s Lawrence Abrams contacted Mogilevich to seek verification. The group reportedly declined to provide proof unless shown “proof of funds” totaling $15,000. That reported condition does not authenticate the alleged data: the report did not say that proof was provided or that the contents were independently examined.

HotHardware also said Mogilevich offered the alleged data for sale, with a stated deadline of March 4, 2024. That deadline is historical; it does not establish whether a sale or publication later occurred.

The February 28, 2024 report supports a narrow conclusion: Mogilevich made a claim, Epic said there was zero evidence supporting it and that the group had not provided proof, and HotHardware did not independently verify a theft. The report does not establish whether the allegation was later confirmed or disproven, whether any data was ultimately published or sold, or what subsequent investigations concluded. It should not be treated as a current assessment of Epic’s security status.
