Yes. In June 2020, Lion confirmed that a ransomware attack had forced it to shut down IT systems, disrupting brewing, Lion Dairy & Drinks manufacturing, customer service, ordering and visibility of product availability. Some sites went offline, manual processes were used to keep orders and deliveries moving, and the company warned of possible temporary shortages. The public record does not establish the attacker, ransom, exact downtime or a later confirmed data-theft finding.
What happened in the Lion ransomware attack?
Lion first disclosed on 9 June 2020 that it had shut down IT systems following a “cyber incident.” On 12 June, the company identified the incident as ransomware. The shutdown was part of Lion’s response and affected operations that relied on those systems, not just office IT. SecurityWeek’s account reported disruption to customers and suppliers and said some manufacturing sites were forced offline.
In an update published on 12 June, Lion said its teams were using manual processes while looking for alternatives. It also acknowledged that restoring access was taking longer than it had hoped: “We had been hoping to have full access restored by now, but unfortunately this process is taking longer than we hoped.” Brews News reproduced the company update.

Did the attack stop beer production?
It disrupted brewing, but the available reporting does not say that every brewery stopped or that beer production ceased completely. Lion said breweries were being brought back online progressively. The incident delayed planned increases in brewing, while reduced visibility of product availability made it harder to know what stock could be supplied.

Impacts also extended to Lion Dairy & Drinks. Some customer-service functions remained affected and some manufacturing sites were still offline in the 12 June update. Lion warned that temporary shortages could result as production and systems recovered. These reports describe disruption and a risk of shortages; they do not quantify lost output or confirm how many customers experienced a shortage.
Why were orders and deliveries handled manually?
With IT systems unavailable, Lion could not rely on its usual digital processes for all customer and supplier work. The company said it was implementing manual processes and investigating alternatives to service them. Manual ordering and delivery arrangements helped operations continue while access was being restored, but they did not immediately restore normal system visibility or full production.

The disruption did not affect every part of the supply chain in the same way. In the update reproduced by Brews News, Lion said milk collection from dairy farmers and fruit collection from orange growers were not affected. Lion’s 2020 Modern Slavery Statement described a wider supplier base of more than 3,700 suppliers across 23 countries, with about 80% of Australia and New Zealand spend concentrated in 99 suppliers. Lion said at the time that it had no evidence that information in its systems, including financial or personal information, had been affected, and that its investigation was continuing. That was a time-bounded statement about what the company knew during the June 2020 response; it does not prove that information was never accessed. The cited public reporting does not establish a later confirmed data-exfiltration finding.

How long was Lion offline?
The cited reporting does not give an exact outage duration. Lion said on 12 June that full access had not yet been restored, and some manufacturing sites remained offline while breweries were returning progressively. That establishes an ongoing recovery at that point, not when all systems or sites returned to normal.
What is known—and not known—about the incident?
The public record supports a ransomware attack and operational disruption, but it does not fill in several technical or financial details. The cited accounts do not identify the attacker, ransomware family, initial access method, ransom demand or payment, quantified financial loss, or exact duration of the outage. Those details should not be inferred from the production impact alone.

The incident also produced an unusual customer-service consequence. During the outage, Lion accidentally published an incorrect Tasmanian customer-service number on a customer portal. Dairy customers calling about milk orders were routed to Sydney cybersecurity consultancy Cliffside Security, which fielded the calls until Lion corrected the number, according to iTnews.
How large is Lion’s operation?
For context, Lion’s corporate site currently lists 2,500 employees, 155 brands and 19 sites across Australia and New Zealand; these are current company figures, not a description of Lion’s size at the time of the 2020 attack.
