RangerBot is an autonomous underwater robot developed by Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and collaborators to monitor coral reefs and identify crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS), a native coral predator. A QUT announcement on 31 August 2018 said the robot was ready for further operational testing—not that it had been approved or deployed across the Great Barrier Reef. The Reef Authority’s documented control program is a broader effort involving prioritized surveys, vessel crews and specialist divers.
What is RangerBot?
Despite the familiar “drone” label, RangerBot is not an aerial aircraft. It is an autonomous underwater robot intended to navigate reef environments and carry out monitoring and science tasks. QUT developed it as a successor to its earlier COTSbot prototype.
In its 2018 announcement, QUT described RangerBot as using computer vision for real-time navigation, obstacle avoidance and science missions. The project team said it could monitor coral bleaching, water quality, pest species, pollution and siltation, map underwater areas, and identify COTS. These are capabilities reported by the developer at that time, not a current independent evaluation.

How does RangerBot identify and control crown-of-thorns starfish?
The 2018 QUT release said RangerBot could identify COTS using computer vision and reported 99.4% identification accuracy. It also described an injection response after identification was confirmed. The figure and capability belong to that dated project announcement; the available evidence does not establish a current, independently verified performance rate or current field use.
COTS are native to the Great Barrier Reef, but outbreaks can cause significant coral damage over large areas. QUT’s earlier COTSbot work, announced in 2015, described a prototype designed to seek and control starfish. Its planned search time of up to eight hours and more than 200 lethal shots were COTSbot design claims, not RangerBot specifications. A 2016 QUT report described the intended role as supporting existing human control: robots could search for many starfish while specialist divers dealt with animals in harder-to-reach places.

What did “ready to defend the Reef” mean?
QUT’s 31 August 2018 announcement said RangerBot was ready to undergo further operational testing. Testing, review and approvals were still next steps. The announcement therefore does not demonstrate that RangerBot was then approved for routine operations, nor does it establish that the robot is deployed today or has eradicated COTS across the Reef.
The sources available do not establish RangerBot’s current deployment status. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s current control-program description documents vessel crews and trained specialist divers; it does not identify RangerBot as part of those operations.

How the Reef’s current COTS control effort works
The Reef Authority’s Crown-of-thorns Starfish Control Program aims to reduce starfish numbers to levels where coral growth and recovery can outpace predation. It prioritizes reefs using ecological and economic value alongside reef-level outbreak information, then organizes surveillance, reef-health surveys and culling by vessel crews and trained personnel. RangerBot should be understood as a potential technology within this wider challenge, not as a stand-alone solution for the entire Great Barrier Reef.
For the 2025–26 reporting period, the Reef Authority reports the following program figures. They describe the wider control effort, not work attributed to RangerBot:

In 2023, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation announced a $9.8 million Crown-of-thorns Starfish Control Innovation Program spanning robotics, genetics, environmental DNA, pheromones and research into natural predators. The Foundation described the goal as improving prediction, detection and response at scale. Its June 2023 report also covered an 11-day collaborative effort testing detection methods.

Those initiatives show that research into COTS management continues, but they do not establish that RangerBot is the robot currently being deployed. The approaches have different purposes and stages of development: some support monitoring or early detection, some target culling, and others investigate biological or genetic strategies.
