Rajkummar Rao says he is glad filmmakers think of him for biopics, but he does not want to define his career by labels such as “star” or “brand.” In a Hindustan Times report on a FICCI Frames panel, he described biopics as difficult projects that take courage from everyone involved—and said his focus remains on the script and character.

What Rajkummar Rao said about biopics

Asked about his association with biographical films, Rao told Hindustan Times: “I’m glad that people think of me when they think of a biopic. Biopics are a very difficult genre. And it takes a lot of guts and courage for everybody involved to make a biopic.” He added, “I have been offered a lot of them apart from what I have done.”

The remarks were made during a panel discussion at FICCI Frames, according to Hindustan Times’ Oct. 1, 2026 report by Vishakha Pandit. The Times of India and other entertainment coverage also describe the comments in the context of the panel, but the quotes here are attributed to Rao as reported by Hindustan Times; no event recording or official transcript was located.

Why Rao says he does not think of himself as a brand

Rao’s other central point was that public labels do not guide his choices as an actor. “Whatever terms people give you: star, superstar, brand, it does not concern me. My love for my art would always be first,” he said, according to the Hindustan Times report.

He also said: “It’s been 16 years in the industry, but I have never seen myself as a brand.” Recalling his early ambition, he added: “Growing up, when I started doing theatre, my dream was to be a film actor one day. It was never to be a brand.”

For Rao, the work on a script is the priority. “When I go on set, when I take a script in my hand, and I start working on that script, that’s the most powerful. And the purest form of perceiving my art,” he said. He described choosing a role without first asking whether it fits a market image: “When I am working on a character, I don’t want to deviate and think, ‘Is this story going to match my brand value?’ I don’t think like that. So for me, I am always going to be an actor. People can call you whatever they want.”

The project context: Ujjwal Nikam

The Hindustan Times report connects Rao’s comments to Prahaar – The Ujjwal Nikam Story, identifying him as playing public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam. The Times of India has reported an Oct. 16, 2026 theatrical release date, but that date and the film’s exact title styling are not independently established by the interview report. The remarks themselves do not establish the film’s current release status.
