Amrinder Singh Raja Warring submitted his resignation as Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president to Rahul Gandhi on October 2, 2026. The Indian Express reported that the All India Congress Committee (AICC) had not formally announced a replacement as of its report, leaving Vijay Inder Singla and several other leaders as reported possibilities—not confirmed appointees.

What happened to Raja Warring?

Warring said he had submitted his resignation to Rahul Gandhi, who appointed him state president. “No one has asked me to resign,” The Indian Express quoted him as saying after their October 2 meeting. He added: “Now I am a former president.” The report described him as Ludhiana MP and outgoing PPCC chief.

The distinction matters: Warring said he chose to submit the resignation to the party leader who had appointed him; the report did not describe a formal AICC announcement confirming the resignation or naming a successor.

Who could replace Warring?

Vijay Inder Singla was reported by The Indian Express as a frontrunner, but no appointment had been confirmed in that report. The same account said these other names were also in circulation:

  • Charanjit Singh Channi
  • Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa
  • Pargat Singh
  • Gurjeet Singh Aujla

An earlier report also mentioned Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria. These names reflect media-reported discussion, not an official shortlist. Until AICC announces a choice, there is no confirmed successor to compare.

Why is the leadership changing?

The resignation followed months of reported internal disagreement and a leadership review. According to The Indian Express, Sachin Pilot was appointed AICC in-charge of Punjab on September 5, 2026, replacing Bhupesh Baghel. Pilot consulted party leaders and submitted an organisational assessment. The newspaper reported that some state-unit leaders, including people associated with former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi, had pressed for Warring’s removal. Those accounts describe reported party dynamics, not a public finding by Congress.

Warring said he got the impression that Pilot wanted him removed. The Times of India quoted him saying, “I feel that Sachin Pilot may have thought that Raja should be removed. I do not have any concrete evidence for this.” That is Warring’s interpretation, and he explicitly said he lacked concrete evidence; it does not establish Pilot’s motive.

The Indian Express’s October 1 report said more than 50 interactions with leaders and district functionaries informed Pilot’s report, citing a source. That is a newspaper-reported figure, not an independently documented official count. The same report discussed regional, community and factional considerations. Its estimate that Hindus make up about 38 per cent of Punjab’s population is likewise a figure attributed to that report, not an independently verified demographic statistic.

How the transition unfolded

  • April 2022: Warring took charge of the Punjab Congress unit after Navjot Singh Sidhu stepped aside following the party’s Assembly defeat.
  • July 2026: The high command retained Warring after an earlier review while assigning roles to other senior leaders, according to The Indian Express. Reported dissent continued.
  • September 5, 2026: Pilot was appointed AICC in-charge of Punjab, replacing Bhupesh Baghel, The Indian Express reported.
  • October 1, 2026: The Indian Express reported, citing party sources, that the high command had decided to replace Warring. India Today also reported a resignation and source-based successor speculation.
  • October 2, 2026: The Indian Express reported that Warring submitted his resignation to Rahul Gandhi, while noting that AICC had not formally announced a replacement at publication.

What is confirmed—and what remains open?

  • Reported directly: Warring said he submitted his resignation to Rahul Gandhi on October 2.
  • Not confirmed in the latest cited report: A formal AICC announcement accepting the change or appointing a new Punjab Congress chief.
  • Still speculative: Singla and the other leaders named in reports as possible successors.

The status can change quickly. The latest cited account here is The Indian Express report published October 2, 2026; it records the position at that time, not any later party decision.
