For garden watering, a water butt is usually the straightforward choice. A larger rainwater harvesting system is worth considering when you have regular non-potable household demand—such as toilet flushing—and room and budget for a tank, pump, overflow and more involved installation. Neither option guarantees a particular bill saving: the result depends on rainfall, roof area, storage, how much mains water you replace, your tariff and installation costs.
What is the difference?
A water butt is the simplest form of rainwater harvesting: it collects roof runoff from a gutter and downpipe and stores it for outdoor use, especially watering the garden. A larger rainwater harvesting system adds storage and equipment such as a pump and distribution plumbing. Depending on its design, it may supply outdoor taps or non-potable household uses such as toilet flushing.
The key choice is not whether one is universally better. It is whether you need a modest supply for outdoor tasks or want to capture and use rainwater across more of the home.

Compare the options
| Consideration | Water butt | Larger rainwater harvesting system |
|---|---|---|
| Typical uses | Garden watering and similar outdoor tasks | Outdoor taps and, with suitable design, non-potable uses such as toilet flushing or laundry |
| Equipment | Gutter/downpipe connection, debris filter, stable base, tap and overflow arrangement | Tank, pump and distribution equipment; indoor uses require more careful design |
| Space and installation | Often easier to place beside a downpipe if there is room for a firm, level base | May require substantial tank space, excavation and specialist installation; retrofitting can be difficult |
| Upkeep | Clear the gutter and filter, keep the butt covered and clean it when needed | Maintain the tank, filters, pump and distribution system according to the system designer’s instructions |
| Financial case | Less complex, but storage is limited | More equipment and installation complexity; any mains-water reduction depends on actual use and tariffs |
This is a qualitative comparison, not a like-for-like price or payback calculation. The available guidance does not establish current, comparable costs or a universal saving for either option.

- Drawstring Design: With practical drawstring, simple and convenient. It can be better connected to a smaller diameter rain barrel to prevent being blown away by the wind.
When a water butt is the better fit
Choose a butt if your main aim is to collect water for the garden and you want a simpler installation. Before buying, check that a suitable downpipe is available and that the ground can support a firm, level stand. A filter helps keep debris out, while a close-fitting lid helps discourage algae and reduces the entry of rain-borne plant-disease spores. The Royal Horticultural Society’s practical advice on collecting, storing and using water also recommends keeping gutters clear.
If one butt does not hold enough, multiple butts can be joined. A pump may help when you need better pressure for a hose. If stored water smells, the RHS advises emptying and cleaning the butt rather than adding chemicals.

When to consider a larger system
A larger system may make sense if there is regular non-potable demand to use the collected water, not just occasional garden watering. Decide which uses you want to serve before discussing tank size or equipment: demand, roof catchment, tank location, overflow destination, pump and distribution all affect the design. Indoor applications need particular care; government guidance on permeable front gardens recommends specialist advice for toilet-flushing systems.
The same guidance cautions that larger systems can be expensive and difficult to retrofit, and that an overflow route to a drain or soakaway is needed. Do not assume an existing home is suitable without checking the site and proposed design.

For development design in England, the national SuDS standards say to consider rainwater harvesting where non-potable demand and a suitable contributing catchment can provide safe, efficient savings, where landscape irrigation is needed, or where development is in an area identified as seriously water stressed. The standards reference BS EN 16941 for system design; they are not a guarantee that a particular household will save money.
What can harvested rainwater be used for?
Keep harvested roof water separate from drinking-water expectations. The Environment Agency’s 2010 domestic rainwater guide covers uses including garden watering, toilet flushing and laundry, but not drinking, food preparation or personal hygiene. It is useful for understanding the distinction between potable and non-potable uses, not for current prices.

Each foldable PVC rain barrel is pre-fitted with a dedicated outflow valve, which supports linking multiple rain barrels to collect rainwater from gutter in series to expand your total rainwater storage volume.
Will either option lower your water bill?
A household on a water meter may reduce mains-water use if harvested rain actually replaces water it would otherwise draw from the mains. The size of any bill effect depends on local rainfall, roof catchment, storage capacity, household demand, the metered tariff and system costs. Government guidance notes potential bill savings for metered use, but does not support a fixed saving or payback period for every home. Treat any estimate as specific to the property and system, not as a typical result.

The Environment Agency’s regulatory position statement applies to England. It defines harvested rainwater as water collected from roofs or other above-ground surfaces through above-ground pipes and tanks, isolated from inland waters or groundwater. In the circumstances it describes, a water abstraction licence is not needed for water consisting only of harvested rainwater.
