Iran rejected the suggestion: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi replied, “You’re barking up the wrong tree,” and Tehran lodged a diplomatic protest. Police have described an ongoing investigation, not a confirmed bombing.
What happened near RAF Fairford?
Early on Sunday, 27 September 2026, three vans were found blocking a road near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. The incident triggered a security response and evacuations in the surrounding area. Police said petrol was found in the vans and that no explosive devices were found. The presence of petrol does not mean an explosive device was discovered. AP News and Sky News reported those details.
Five men from London, all in their 20s, were initially arrested on suspicion of explosives offences and terrorism-related offences and later released on bail. AP subsequently reported that a sixth person, a 25-year-old dual UK-Iranian national, was arrested in London on Thursday and also released on bail. Arrest and bail are procedural steps; they are not findings of guilt. The reports describe an active police investigation.
What did Burnham say about Iran?
On Wednesday, 30 September, Burnham said there were “strong indications” Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford. He added that it remained an “ongoing, complex and serious police investigation” and said he could not say more at that stage. Sky News reported his remarks.

That wording is an attributed public assessment, not a public presentation of proof. The reports reviewed do not disclose the intelligence or other evidence behind the assessment, identify a chain of command, or explain what “played a part” means in this case. It would therefore be inaccurate to describe Iranian involvement as established fact.

Araghchi’s reply
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected Burnham’s attribution on X, writing: “You’re barking up the wrong tree.” Hindustan Times reported the response and reproduced a longer version of the post. The short phrase is sufficient to convey his public denial without relying on a full transcription from a secondary report.

Embassy statement and diplomatic protest
The Iranian Embassy in London separately said it “categorically rejects and strongly condemns” speculation linking Iran to the arrests, describing it as unfounded and malicious. ITV News West Country reported the statement.
AP reported that Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned Britain’s ambassador in Tehran on Thursday to protest the allegation. It called the claim baseless and sought an official explanation and a change in the UK’s approach. These are Iran’s stated positions; the public reporting reviewed does not resolve the competing claims.

Did Iran play a part in the RAF Fairford incident?
The careful answer is that Burnham said there were “strong indications” of an Iranian role, while Iran denied involvement and protested diplomatically. The public reports cited here do not provide evidence that independently establishes which claim is correct. The police investigation remains a separate process, and the arrests do not prove either Iranian responsibility or the suspects’ guilt.
RAF Fairford is a UK base used by the US military. AP notes that US bombers have used it in Middle East conflicts, including the 2026 war with Iran. That context helps explain the site’s significance in the political exchange, but it is not evidence that Iran was responsible for this incident.
