Radar can detect pulse-related motion without touching the skin, and researchers are exploring whether those signals can estimate blood pressure. But radar-based blood-pressure monitoring is not established as a clinically ready consumer technology. In the United States, the 2025 adult hypertension guideline advises against using cuffless devices to diagnose or manage high blood pressure. If you need readings for care decisions, use a validated upper-arm cuff monitor and follow your clinician’s advice.

How could radar estimate blood pressure without a cuff?

A radar sensor can detect tiny physiological movements without contacting the skin. Researchers use signals associated with pulse transit time and pulse waves to explore blood-pressure estimation. The appeal is convenient, unobtrusive measurement—and potentially repeated or continuous readings. Those are possible future uses, not proof that current systems produce reliable clinical readings. A review of contactless blood-pressure technologies describes the approach and its research context.

One 2026 Nature Communications study reported an AI-enabled millimeter-wave (mmWave) system that used one radar to measure pulse transit time at multiple sites without contact and estimate diastolic blood pressure. This is a research result, not evidence that the system is a marketed or authorized medical product.

Are radar blood-pressure monitors available yet?

The evidence considered here does not establish that a radar blood-pressure product is currently authorized for consumer clinical use, nor does it provide a verified launch date or count of such products. Availability and authorization can vary by country and intended use, so a product’s presence for sale would not by itself establish that it is suitable for diagnosis or treatment decisions.

The broader cuffless-device field remains at an early feasibility stage. A 2026 systematic review in The Lancet Digital Health identified 23 articles; its search covered studies published from January 1, 1990, through August 31, 2024. The authors described promising technical work under controlled conditions, while noting small samples, varied methods, and limited blood-pressure ranges. They called for larger studies including people with multiple health conditions, including hypertension, and broadly accepted validation protocols before clinical translation.

Can cuffless readings be trusted for hypertension care?

Not for diagnosis or management under current US guidance. The 2025 ACC/AHA adult hypertension guideline recommends that adults not use cuffless blood-pressure devices for either purpose. It recognizes the potential for simple, unobtrusive, continuous readings but concludes that the evidence does not support clinical use for those decisions.

Accuracy results from one laboratory study cannot establish that a device will work reliably in ordinary life or across different people. The guideline notes substantial variation among cuffless technologies, validation methods, comparison measurements, testing conditions, and study populations. Results also depend on factors such as calibration and the reference method used.

For home readings, use a validated upper-arm cuff monitor and follow clinical advice. The guideline describes cuff-based measurement as the traditional approach in clinical settings and at home. Do not substitute an unvalidated radar or other cuffless estimate for decisions about diagnosis, medication, or treatment.

What FDA’s draft guidance does—and does not—mean

In January 2026, the FDA issued draft guidance titled “Cuffless Non-invasive Blood Pressure Measuring Devices – Clinical Performance Testing and Evaluation.” It provides recommendations for evaluating clinical performance to support premarket submissions. The FDA labels the document non-binding and says it is not for implementation in its current draft form. It is about evidence expectations; it does not approve or validate radar products.

Regulatory status and accuracy are separate questions. The American Heart Association scientific statement on cuffless devices puts it plainly: “regulatory clearance is not synonymous with measurement accuracy.”

Why one good comparison may not be enough

Blood pressure and device performance can vary with posture, activity, sleep, treatment, and time. The AHA statement describes six tests suggested by the European Society of Hypertension for intermittent cuffless devices. Together, they probe conditions that a single comparison at rest may miss:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Static testing at rest: performance under resting conditions.
  • Device-position testing: whether placement or position affects readings.
  • Testing after antihypertensive treatment begins: whether the device tracks changes associated with treatment.
  • Awake-versus-asleep assessment: whether readings differ across those states.
  • Exercise testing: performance after physical activity.
  • Recalibration testing: whether accuracy depends on recalibration and how it changes over time.

These are evaluation considerations, not proof that a particular radar system has passed them. A clinically useful device would need evidence for its intended population and use, not just a promising signal or a favorable result in a narrow test.

What to use while radar monitoring develops

For practical home monitoring, choose a validated upper-arm blood-pressure cuff and use it as directed by your clinician. A radar sensor may eventually make frequent measurement easier, but the evidence described here does not support using one as a replacement for a cuff when diagnosing or managing hypertension. Treat consumer claims about cuffless readings cautiously unless the specific device’s intended use, authorization in your jurisdiction, and independent clinical validation are clear.
