To set up a racing wheel, first match the exact wheel and base variant to your PC or console and the game you intend to play. Product-family names alone do not establish compatibility: some models have separate PlayStation and Xbox versions, and console support may depend on licensing built into the base or wheel. Then follow the manufacturer’s instructions for connecting components, updating firmware, checking calibration and force feedback, and mounting the hardware.
Check compatibility before you buy
Compatibility is specific to the manufacturer, model, variant, and platform. Verify the exact product listing and its support documentation rather than assuming a wheel works across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox because its family name or brand is familiar.
PC, PlayStation, and Xbox support can depend on different hardware
Fanatec’s rules illustrate why checking the exact configuration matters; they apply to Fanatec products, not every racing wheel. Fanatec says its products are compatible with Windows PC, PlayStation compatibility is built into select licensed wheel bases, and Xbox compatibility is supplied by an Xbox-licensed steering wheel. The Thrustmaster T248 is documented in separate versions: one for PS4, PS5, and PC, and another for Xbox One, Xbox Series, and PC. Do not treat the PlayStation version as Xbox-compatible or the Xbox version as PlayStation-compatible. Verify the console generation and wheel-base support
For Fanatec, the Gran Turismo DD Pro and ClubSport DD+ are listed as PlayStation-compatible bases for PS4 and PS5. Fanatec says they are not compatible with PlayStation 1, 2, or 3. That compatibility description is specific to those bases; check the documentation for any other model. Plan how pedals and other peripherals connect
Before assembling a setup, check where the pedals, shifter, and handbrake must connect. On a Fanatec Xbox configuration, Fanatec says these components should connect through a compatible base; its Xbox guidance describes USB-only peripherals as PC-only. Do not assume that connecting an accessory directly to the console will work. Follow the connection diagram and platform guidance for your exact wheel and accessories.

Connect and check the wheel
Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the selected model. The following checks are model-specific examples, not universal steps; a switch position or connection rule for one wheel may not apply to another.
For a Thrustmaster T150
- Connect the wheel base directly to a USB port on the PC or console. Thrustmaster says not to use a USB hub or extension for the T150.
- If using the T150 with PS4 or PS5, set its sliding switch to PS5-PS4 before connecting the wheel.

For a Thrustmaster T248
Thrustmaster recommends checking for driver and firmware updates, confirming the wheel completes its startup calibration, and testing that force feedback operates. Consult the T248 support page for current instructions for the exact variant.
For a Fanatec setup
Check that each component is connected compatibly and that the wheel-side and base-side quick releases match. For console use, follow Fanatec’s platform-specific component guidance and the button mapping in the quick guide for your wheel.

Choose a mounting surface that can support the hardware
A desk may be sufficient if it can mount and support the selected wheel securely. A wheel stand or cockpit is another option; check that it fits the hardware and is rated for the selected setup. Fanatec includes mounting and component checks in its compatibility guidance. Do not assume a particular stand is suitable without checking its specifications.

Use this checklist to compare setups
- Platform support: Does the exact wheel and base configuration support your PC, PlayStation, or Xbox?
- Variant: Is the listing for the PlayStation or Xbox version when the model is sold in separate variants?
- Peripheral connections: Do the pedals, shifter, and handbrake connect through the base or directly to the PC, as the manufacturer requires?
- Mounting: Can your desk, stand, or cockpit support and fit the selected hardware?
- Setup support: Are the correct firmware, calibration, force-feedback checks, and platform-specific instructions available for that model?
