Qwen3.8-27B can be run on your own hardware, but “fits on your laptop” is conditional. The official model identifier is Qwen3.8-27B: a dense model with 27 billion language-model parameters that accepts images and video as well as text. AMD’s August 14, 2026 guide to running it on AMD hardware says roughly 24 GB of variable graphics memory (VGM) or VRAM is needed for comfortable operation on supported AMD systems. That is a vendor-specific guideline, not a minimum for every laptop, and how much memory a given machine can actually assign to the model decides whether it fits.

What the model is

The Qwen Team’s model card on Hugging Face, published in 2026, describes Qwen3.8-27B as a causal language model with a vision encoder. Its layers follow a hybrid pattern rather than one repeated attention block.

Specification Value stated in the 2026 model card
Model type Causal language model with a vision encoder
Language-model parameters 27B (dense)
Layers 64, arranged as 16 repeats of three Gated DeltaNet→FFN blocks followed by one Gated Attention→FFN block
Hidden dimension 5,120
Feed-forward intermediate dimension 17,408
Training Multi-step MTP (Multi-Token Prediction)
Native context length 262,144 tokens
Extended context length Up to 1,000,000 tokens, as an extension of the native length
Native input types Text, images and video, including documents and STEM diagrams

How the layers are arranged

The 64 layers form 16 repeats of a four-block group: three Gated DeltaNet blocks, each followed by a feed-forward network (FFN), and then one Gated Attention block, also followed by an FFN. Three of every four token-mixing layers therefore use the DeltaNet form, and one in four uses gated attention. The model card does not give memory or speed figures for each layer type, so this layout explains how the model is built but does not by itself tell you how much memory your machine needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Context length: 262K native, up to 1M as an extension

The native context window is 262,144 tokens. The card states that it can be extended to 1,000,000 tokens, but that figure is an extension, not the baseline. A deployed service or a local runtime may expose a smaller limit. Longer contexts consume more memory during inference, so a long context setting can push a machine that otherwise fits past its memory limit.

Image and video input

The card describes native image and video understanding, including documents and STEM diagrams. Multimodal input depends on the runtime and serving setup supporting the vision encoder, so check which image and video formats your chosen runtime accepts before building a workflow around them.

Reasoning control

Thinking mode is on by default, and the model card documents three controls for it. The official wording is:

“Thinking mode is on by default and can be disabled per request; reasoning depth can be tuned with reasoning_effort, and reasoning context from historical messages is retained via preserve_thinking.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Availability and exact syntax can differ between serving stacks, so confirm both in your runtime’s documentation before automating them.

Turning thinking off for a request

Because thinking is on by default, you have to disable it deliberately for requests that do not need it. Short jobs with a fixed output format, such as classifying a line of text or reformatting a record, are the usual candidates. Disabling thinking removes the reasoning step for that request only, so it suits work where the intermediate reasoning adds latency without changing the answer you need.

Tuning depth with reasoning_effort

reasoning_effort sets how deeply the model reasons before answering. The model card confirms the control exists but does not publish a mapping from each setting to token cost or accuracy, so measure the trade-off on your own tasks rather than assuming a setting’s effect.

Keeping reasoning across turns with preserve_thinking

preserve_thinking retains reasoning context from historical messages. It matters most in multi-turn agent loops, where a later step may depend on earlier reasoning. The cost is that each request carries a longer context, which draws on the same memory budget discussed in the hardware section.

Runtimes and what they expose

The README documents seven local-use or deployment paths. The table shows which of them include an OpenAI-compatible local API in the README’s examples.

Runtime Listed in the QwenLM README OpenAI-compatible local API in README examples
Transformers Yes Not stated in the README
llama.cpp Yes Not stated in the README
MLX Yes Not stated in the README
Unsloth Yes Not stated in the README
SGLang Yes Yes, with reasoning and tool-call parser settings
vLLM Yes Yes, with reasoning and tool-call parser settings
TokenSpeed Yes Yes, with reasoning and tool-call parser settings

For the four runtimes marked “Not stated,” the README does not show an OpenAI-compatible server example, so check each project’s documentation before assuming one exists.

Agentic integration

Tool use with this model is a three-part integration: the model, the serving runtime’s parsers and API, and the harness or application that acts on the model’s output. The README’s SGLang, vLLM and TokenSpeed examples include reasoning and tool-call parser settings, which help the server handle reasoning output and tool-call formatting for the client. Compatible parsers and APIs connect these parts; they do not make an agent safe or reliable on their own.

Qwen Code

The README names Qwen Code, an open-source terminal agent optimized for Qwen models. It is installed separately from the model and the runtime.

What “fits on your laptop” requires

AMD says the model runs on supported AMD systems, including Ryzen AI Max+ processor-based systems and the Radeon AI PRO R9700 with 32 GB of graphics memory. The roughly 24 GB figure describes comfortable operation on those supported platforms. It is not a universal minimum, and memory architecture, quantization, context length and runtime all change the practical fit.

Memory: what counts and where it comes from

On systems with shared memory, the figure that matters is how much memory you can assign to graphics. On a discrete card such as the R9700, it is the card’s own VRAM. Either way, the number to compare against is the memory the runtime can actually use while the model and your context are loaded, not the total memory the machine advertises.

These are AMD’s figures from its own test setup, not independent comparisons. Do not compare them with numbers from other vendors, other quantizations or other context lengths.

A checklist for judging your own machine

  • Available graphics or unified memory, after the operating system and other applications take their share.
  • Precision or quantization format, since it changes the memory the weights occupy.
  • Backend and runtime, such as llama.cpp on Vulkan or a server framework on another backend.
  • The context length you actually plan to use, not the maximum the model supports.
  • Throughput measured on your own prompts and settings, with the same reasoning and parser options you will use in production.

Published benchmark figures

The model card reports the following results. They are the developer’s own evaluation, and the card’s methodology notes describe the conditions for each task:

  • SWE-bench Pro: 61.7
  • CoWorkBench: 70.7

Two scores on two benchmarks do not measure overall capability. No independent third-party benchmark is cited here, so read these numbers as the model’s reported results on those tasks rather than as a ranking against other models.
