To correct the expense account or class on a saved credit card charge, use Accountant > Client Data Review > Reclassify Transactions if your QuickBooks Desktop edition includes the tool. It is documented for Accountant Desktop, Enterprise, and Accountant Enterprise. The tool can update one eligible transaction or a selected group. First confirm whether the error is in the expense/item coding or in the credit card account itself: those are different fields.
How do I reclassify a credit card charge in QuickBooks Desktop?
Reclassification applies to a transaction already recorded in the company file. Intuit documents the Reclassify Transactions workflow for QuickBooks Accountant Desktop, Enterprise, and Accountant Enterprise; feature availability depends on edition. Do not assume the Accountant menu path is available in every Pro or Premier edition. See Intuit’s Reclassify Transactions instructions.
- Set the review period and basis. Go to Accountant > Client Data Review, choose Modify Review, set the fiscal year or date range, and select Cash or Accrual.
- Enable reclassification for the review. In Account Balances, set Reclassify Transactions to In Progress, then close the review setup.
- Open the tool. Return to Accountant > Client Data Review > Reclassify Transactions.
- Find the charge. Choose the account type and account, then use the available name and transaction filters. Inspect the results to confirm you have the intended transaction.
- Choose what to change. Select the transaction, check Account to and choose the correct account to fix expense-account coding, or check Class and choose the correct class. You can select both when both assignments need correction.
- Apply the correction. Select Reclassify.
The tool does not reclassify transactions that use Accounts Payable or Accounts Receivable, including invoices and bills, or transactions linked to other transactions. If the charge is ineligible, do not force a correction through this workflow; determine the proper transaction-level correction or consult a qualified bookkeeping professional.

“Account” can refer to two different things on a charge. The credit card account records the liability—the amount the business owes. The expense account or item records what the purchase was for. Changing the expense category does not, by itself, change which card account holds the liability.

When entering a charge, QuickBooks Desktop uses the Credit Card dropdown to identify the card. The Expenses or Items tab records the purchase details. Intuit’s explanation of credit card accounts in QuickBooks Desktop describes this distinction.
- If the purchase is posted to the wrong expense category, correct the expense-account assignment using Reclassify Transactions if available and the transaction is eligible.
- If the wrong card account was selected, that is a liability-account correction, not an expense reclassification. Verify the transaction and the appropriate correction before changing it; the cited reclassification instructions do not establish that this tool changes the credit card account field.
For context, QuickBooks Desktop records a charge by choosing Banking > Enter Credit Card Charges, selecting the card and Purchase/Charge or Refund/Credit, entering vendor and date details, recording expenses or items, and saving. A purchase paid for at the time may be entered as a check or credit card charge; a vendor invoice paid later is generally recorded as a bill followed by a bill payment. Intuit covers these workflows in its guides to entering expenses in QuickBooks Desktop and using credit card accounts.

How do I fix a credit card charge categorized to the wrong expense account?
If the charge is saved and eligible for the tool, use the Accountant/Enterprise reclassification steps above and select the correct destination in Account to. Review the vendor, date, amount, and current coding before applying the change. If the transaction is linked to another transaction or uses A/P or A/R, the documented tool cannot change it.

A downloaded feed item and a saved credit card charge are different stages. Bank Feeds presents cleared activity for review; you can add it as a new transaction or match it to a transaction already recorded. If the item has not yet been added or matched, categorize or match it in the feed workflow rather than trying to reclassify it as an existing saved charge. Intuit explains this distinction in its guide to categorizing transactions and setting rules in QuickBooks Desktop.

Can I edit one charge without the Reclassify Transactions tool?
For QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, Intuit documents this single-transaction route: go to Company > Transaction Center, select the transaction type, search, double-click the transaction, make the correction, and save. The Expense Tracker includes credit card charges. This is Mac-specific guidance; the cited instructions do not establish an equivalent Windows menu path. See Intuit’s instructions for viewing and editing transactions in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac.
