There is no objective winner in a poll spanning resource-gathering Peons, stealthy Mirage Tanks and capital ships. “Best” might mean strongest in a fight, most useful to an army, most distinctive—or simply the unit you remember fondly. The quarterfinals invite you to choose your own standard and vote for the unit that earns it.

What does “best RTS unit” mean?

It depends on what you value. Fraser Brown, Online Editor at PC Gamer, frames the poll as a reader decision: “But what does ‘best’ actually mean? That’s up to you!” A one-on-one fight is one possible test, but it is not the only one. A worker that makes a base function, a memorable voice line, or a convincing tree disguise can all make a strong case.

This is a popularity vote, not a controlled comparison of unit statistics. The competitors have different jobs, costs, scales and game rules, so a vote is clearest when you decide what matters to you and apply that lens consistently.

Ways to choose

  • Combat: Consider damage, durability, or performance in a particular matchup—not an imagined universal duel between units from different games.
  • Strategic utility: Give credit for gathering resources, building, supporting an army, scouting, sieging, moving troops or producing a fleet.
  • Cost and availability: Ask whether a unit’s battlefield impact justifies its price or whether being cheap and easy to field is part of its appeal.
  • Distinctiveness: Judge the design, scale, animation, disguise or voice that makes a unit instantly recognizable.
  • Personal attachment: Nostalgia, lore, humor or a memorable moment in a campaign can be a reason to vote, even if it is not a combat argument.

Who is in the original tournament field?

The tournament began with 16 competitors in eight first-round pairings. Each entry represents a particular game, even when a unit name or concept appears across a wider series. The descriptions below reflect the cited tournament article; they are not a shared stat sheet or an objective ranking.

  • Multiple paths of victory offer unique strategy opportunity
  • Expansive game engages both new and experienced players
Unit and game What makes it a candidate
Peon — Warcraft 3 An Orcish worker who gathers resources and builds the base; Peons can also fight or shelter in a burrow.
Glass Dragon — Rise of Legends Praised for its appearance and ability to destroy tanks.
Mammoth Tank — Command & Conquer: Red Alert A powerful vehicle whose cost and slow pace are part of its trade-off.
Petard — Age of Empires 2 A self-sacrificing unit used to attack structures.
Psyker — Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Noted for voice acting and its connection to the game’s setting.
Rohirrim — The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth Remembered as an upgraded mounted force with strong trample utility.
High Templar — StarCraft A lore-rich unit with area-effect potential; the contributor recalls discovering a powerful army combination.
Pride of Hiigara — Homeworld A mobile base and factory that can carry a fleet and produce capital ships. Its mobility differs between the original campaign and Homeworld 2.
Mirage Tank — Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 A stealthy attacker disguised as a tree, with disguise options and damage potential highlighted.
Ballista — Warcraft 2 A straightforward long-range siege unit.
Attack Cycle — Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun A cheap, fast Nod vehicle described as effective in swarms.
Executor Super Star Destroyer — Star Wars: Empire at War A huge capital ship whose scale and in-game firepower are central to its appeal.
Atreides Sonic Tank — Dune II One of the named competitors; the available description does not establish further details.
Dolphin — Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 One of the named competitors; the available description does not establish further details.
Peewee — Total Annihilation A basic Kbot, cheerful in appearance and armed with energy blasters.
Priest — Age of Empires Made memorable by its “Wololo” line.

How should you compare such different units?

Compare candidates on the kind of contribution they make, rather than treating every matchup as a literal duel. A worker such as the Peon can be valuable because it enables an economy and base; a Petard is designed for a dangerous attack on structures; and the Pride of Hiigara operates at the scale of a mobile fleet base. Each can be a favorite for a different reason.

Trade-offs also matter. The Mammoth Tank’s power comes with cost and slowness in the source description, while the Attack Cycle’s case includes being cheap and fast enough to work in swarms. Distinctiveness offers another route: the Mirage Tank’s tree disguise, the Executor’s scale and the Priest’s “Wololo” are not interchangeable combat attributes, but they are memorable reasons to pick a favorite.

Cast a vote for your kind of greatness

Pick the candidate you believe deserves the title, then make the standard behind your choice clear: best in a fight, most useful, most distinctive, or your personal all-time favorite. There is no single scale that makes a worker, a stealth vehicle and a super star destroyer directly comparable. The point of the poll is to let readers decide what “greatest” means.
