At Qualcomm Investor Day on November 19, 2024, Nakul Duggal framed the company’s automotive and industrial strategy around intelligent computing at the edge. In a related EE Times interview published November 22, he described a $45 billion automotive design-win pipeline—a 2024 figure, not a current estimate. The discussion spans Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis, edge AI, and a broader industrial-IoT offering that combines hardware, software, services, and deployment support.

What was the interview about?

EE Times and TIRIAS Research interviewed Nakul Duggal, Qualcomm’s general manager for automotive, industrial, and cloud, in a video published November 22, 2024. The interview description highlights Qualcomm’s automotive design-win pipeline. It followed Qualcomm Investor Day 2024, held November 19, where Duggal presented on automotive and industrial businesses. In the official transcript, he says his remit includes automotive, industrial and embedded IoT, and cloud computing, and outlines an agenda covering automotive progress, AI, driver assistance and automated driving, investment through the rest of the decade, and a revised industrial-IoT roadmap. What is the Snapdragon Digital Chassis?

Duggal presented the Snapdragon Digital Chassis as a vehicle-computing platform rather than a single chip. It spans cockpit systems and automated driving, with computing capabilities that can be tiered across vehicle trim levels. Qualcomm’s pitch is that automakers can build on a programmable, open platform designed for safety, reliability, quality, and vehicle lifecycles that extend beyond ten years. Duggal described the software-defined vehicle as requiring “tremendous versatility, agility, and options for the automaker.” Qualcomm Investor Day 2024 transcript

In this framing, AI readiness is part of a longer-lived vehicle architecture: automakers need room to adapt software and capabilities over a vehicle’s lifespan, rather than treating each feature as an isolated hardware choice. The transcript describes Qualcomm’s strategy and goals; it does not establish that every vehicle using the platform implements every capability.

What does the $45 billion design-win pipeline mean?

The EE Times interview description gives Qualcomm’s automotive design-win pipeline as $45 billion. This is the figure cited in connection with the 2024 interview, not a 2026 update or a statement of revenue already earned. A design win indicates that a supplier’s technology has been selected for a vehicle program; it does not by itself show when a vehicle will launch, how many units will ship, or how much revenue Qualcomm will recognize.

At Investor Day, Duggal said approximately one third of that pipeline was associated with ADAS and autonomy. That share is likewise 2024 Investor Day context. EE Times interview description · Qualcomm Investor Day 2024 transcript

How is Qualcomm approaching industrial IoT and edge AI?

Qualcomm described its industrial-IoT blueprint as extending beyond processors. It brings together a hardware stack, software, edge-AI infrastructure, services, deployment solutions, and location or observability services. The named enterprise processor family is Qualcomm IQ Series. The strategy is organized around the edge: connected devices and systems can process information near where it is generated, while linking to cloud resources when needed. Qualcomm’s stated examples include healthcare, retail, energy, and enterprise, with reusable blueprints as well as solutions tailored to particular industries. Qualcomm’s Investor Day overview

Qualcomm also presented ecosystem participation as part of the offer, naming system integrators, resellers, developers, and large enterprises. Its cited resources include the Qualcomm AI Hub and the Qualcomm IoT Solution Framework. For a development team, the practical distinction is that the proposition is not just access to a chip: it includes software and deployment resources intended to help build and operate edge-AI solutions.

What did Qualcomm say about the market opportunity?

Qualcomm’s November 2024 account cited an IDC projection of $3.4 trillion in global digital-transformation spending by 2026. That is an IDC forecast cited by Qualcomm, not Qualcomm revenue, a Qualcomm market-share figure, or a result reported by the company. Duggal said, “We’re organizing ourselves to be highly relevant in this space,” describing the company’s effort to align its capabilities with industrial and edge opportunities.
