Qualcomm’s February 24, 2025 announcement enables phone makers to offer up to eight consecutive years of Android software and security updates on smartphones running Snapdragon 8 Elite. It is not an automatic eight-year guarantee: each manufacturer decides whether to extend support for a specific phone, so check that model’s published policy.
What Qualcomm announced
Qualcomm said it would give device manufacturers the ability to provide up to eight consecutive years of Android software and security updates for smartphones running Snapdragon 8 Elite. The announcement describes a maximum support capability, not a standard every eligible phone must meet. Qualcomm’s February 24, 2025 announcement also does not specify a universal update cadence or a fixed number of major Android version upgrades.
Qualcomm described its work with Google as helping facilitate Android OS upgrades on Snapdragon devices. That collaboration does not make Google the decision-maker for an individual phone’s support commitment.

Not necessarily. Qualcomm explicitly leaves the decision to the original equipment manufacturer (OEM)—the phone maker. A device’s use of Snapdragon 8 Elite alone does not establish how long that particular model will receive operating-system or security updates.

Before buying, find the manufacturer’s support terms for the exact model. Check the promised duration for Android OS upgrades and security updates separately, and look for explicit confirmation that the full extended period applies to that device. Do not treat a general chipset announcement as a model-specific promise.
How this compares with Qualcomm’s earlier support announcement
In December 2020, Qualcomm announced a collaboration with Google under which it would support four Android OS versions and four years of security updates for Snapdragon platforms using Project Treble enhancements, starting with Snapdragon 888. That announcement described a support arrangement for the covered platforms; it was not a guarantee that every older Snapdragon phone would receive those updates. Qualcomm’s 2020 announcement provides context for the later increase in stated platform capability.

- Stunning 6.9″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, ultra‑bright up to ~2600 nits, HDR support, “Vision Booster,” and adaptive color tone — giving vivid colours, great outdoor visibility, and super‑smooth scrolling.
- Powerful internals: it runs on the new Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy (3 nm) chip, with 12 GB (or in some markets up to 16 GB) RAM and up to 1 TB UFS 4.0 storage — offering significantly improved CPU/GPU/NPU performance, especially for AI tasks, gaming, and heavy multitasking.
- Advanced quad‑camera system: 200 MP wide main sensor, plus a 50 MP ultrawide, a 50 MP periscope telephoto (5× optical zoom), and a 10 MP telephoto (3× optical zoom) — giving flexibility from ultra‑wide through detailed telephoto shots, and strong performance in varied lighting.
- 5,000 mAh battery with 45 W fast wired charging, wireless charging (Qi2) and reverse wireless charging — balancing long battery life with flexible charging options.
- Durable, premium build: Titanium‑frame body, protected by Corning Gorilla Armor 2 glass, with IP68 dust/water resistance, ultrasonic in‑display fingerprint sensor, modern connectivity (5G, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth, UWB, USB‑C), and long‑term software support (Android 15 / One UI 7, promised 7 major OS/security updates).
| Announcement | Qualcomm’s stated support terms | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| December 2020 | Four Android OS versions and four years of security updates | For Snapdragon platforms using Project Treble enhancements, starting with Snapdragon 888; not a universal promise for older phones. |
| February 2025 | Up to eight consecutive years of Android software and security updates | Begins with smartphones running Snapdragon 8 Elite; the phone maker decides whether an individual device receives the extended support. |
What the eight-year figure does—and does not—mean
- It is a maximum capability: “Up to eight consecutive years” does not mean every covered phone will receive eight years.
- It covers both software and security updates: Qualcomm’s announcement does not set a single update schedule or say how many Android version upgrades a particular phone will receive.
- It is not evidence of universal adoption: the announcements do not provide a complete list of models using the arrangement or show how many manufacturers have adopted it.
Qualcomm’s announcement establishes what the platform arrangement enables, not the current support terms for every phone. Only the manufacturer’s commitment for the exact model can answer how long that device will be supported.
