Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 8 Elite on October 21, 2024, as its flagship mobile platform built around a custom Oryon CPU. The platform pairs that processor with Adreno graphics and a Hexagon neural processing unit (NPU). Qualcomm’s performance figures are comparisons with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3—not independent phone tests—and the experience depends on how each manufacturer implements the platform.
What is Snapdragon 8 Elite?
Snapdragon 8 Elite is a Qualcomm mobile platform announced at Snapdragon Summit on October 21, 2024. Qualcomm described it as the first Snapdragon mobile platform to feature its next-generation custom Oryon CPU. The platform also includes an Adreno GPU for graphics and an enhanced Hexagon NPU for AI workloads. Qualcomm’s launch announcement framed the combination around on-device multimodal generative AI, camera processing, gaming, and browsing.
Qualcomm executive Chris Patrick called Oryon’s arrival in the mobile platform a “major leap forward.” That is the company’s launch characterization, not an independent performance finding.

Custom Oryon CPU
The central change is the move to Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU architecture in a Snapdragon mobile platform. Qualcomm’s launch-era product brief listed a peak CPU speed of 4.32 GHz and described performance and efficiency gains against Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

AI, camera, and connectivity capabilities
Qualcomm promoted on-device multimodal generative AI and AI-assisted camera functions, including image segmentation and video object removal. It also highlighted AI-enhanced 5G and Wi-Fi 7 connectivity. These are platform capabilities described by Qualcomm; individual phone makers decide which functions to implement and how they behave on a particular handset. The launch-era product brief also cites support for Unreal Engine 5.3 Nanite graphics in mobile gaming.

Qualcomm’s current Snapdragon 8-series product page lists CPU speeds up to 4.47 GHz and links to a product brief with that figure. The 4.32 GHz figure comes from the launch-era brief. These are Qualcomm’s stated maximums for the cited materials, not a guarantee that every Snapdragon 8 Elite phone uses the same CPU speed; Qualcomm advises checking the handset maker’s specifications.

- Exact chipset and CPU variant: Confirm the maker’s specification for the precise model and region.
- Sustained performance and thermals: Look for independent device testing under comparable workloads, not just short peak-speed claims.
- Battery life: Compare results from the same or closely matched tests; platform-level efficiency claims do not determine a phone’s runtime.
- Camera and software: Confirm which camera functions are actually included and how the phone maker’s processing performs.
- Network and support: Check regional bands, software-support commitments, price, and local availability.
Is Snapdragon 8 Elite still the latest generation?
No. Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 on September 24, 2025. That is a later platform in the Snapdragon 8 Elite series, distinct from the Snapdragon 8 Elite announced in 2024. Qualcomm’s announcement of Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 uses the full later-generation name; the two products should not be conflated.
